BlackBerry 6 Separates Password Lock and Hardware Lock

This isn’t anything groundbreaking but just a little tidbit some of you may have noticed playing around with BlackBerry 6. With BlackBerry 6, RIM separated out the Lock and Password Lock functionality. The Lock button on the top of the device locks the unit, so there are no accidental key/screen presses, while Password Lock and Timeout requires users to enter their password. With non-touchscreen devices, BlackBerry 6 will have a separate Keyboard Lock and a Password Lock. There are many users who prefer the added security of a Password Lock, especially as the Lock can be disabled on a Torch by sliding it open.

This feature was in the later versions of OS 5 and the official word from RIM is that they’re separated in BlackBerry 6 and onwards. In order to set your device to password lock, you have a few options:

1. Set the Password Timeout to something relatively short in Options > Security > Password > Lock After: 2 Min
2. Use the Password Lock icon on the homescreen.
3. Set the Password Lock to a convenience key.

    I always password lock my BB. On the Torch, sometimes it takes 5-8 seconds for the device to respond after you put in the password to unlock. This is an OS bug that I'm hoping RIM will fix. I have the latest OS from ATT.

    Got my 8520 under password lock as well. Should I lose it/somebody steals it, it should buy me the time to locate the phone.

    Aww .. this explains why my information wasn't showing up on my Torch when I locked my phone using the top button. I have to setup a password lock for it to show. I usually don't put a password lock, but guess I will start now.

    I lock as well to protect company data. As soon as it goes back in my holster I know its locked.

    Do you even know your on BBCool not BGR! This is a blog not a top news site. When BBCool post a new blog it shows at the top of the home page until the next story then it takes the place of the first story then the first takes the place of the second and so on.

    I preferred having the Keyboard Lock (top LHS button) do the Password Lock feature.
    The Keyboard Lock appears to be slower to activate than the Password Lock.
    Pity to use up a convenience key or home screen icon to re-provide a function that worked perfectly well.

    They should make that a user option whether you want them connected or seperate. I would like just one lock!

    Can I set the lock to ‘direct’ or something? I disslike the 1 minute thing. Even with password AND hardware lock I keep pocketcalling peeps.

    Do you have a holster? You can have it lock as soon as it is holstered?

    Well yeah but I find it annoying to use :p

    It should just lock the complete device (with password and all) as soon as I press the lock button (top left corner). Can I do it with like an app or something?

    It seems RIM has separated the 2ems now. I know I use to press and hold A to lock my device and not that hot key just locks the screen.

    It would be nice if they allowed you to combine the function something like “locking screen also locks device”

    MY BLACKBERRY CURVE 8520 GOT STOLEN AND I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE GETTING BACK INFORMATION THAT WAS ON THE HANDHELD PLEASE !!! MY SOCIAL SECURITY ALONG WITH MY CREDIT CARD INFO AND OTHER THINGS ARE ON THE PHONE PLEASE HELP ME RETRIEVE ALL MY INFORMATION BACK AND THEN COMPLETELY DELETE EVERYTHING AFTER ON THE PHONE PLEASE…I HAVE LOTS OF INFORMATION ON MY MEMO PAD ALSO I AM OVER STRESSING MY LIFE ABOUT THIS SITUATION AND FOR A VERY WELL KNOWN COMPANY AND PRODUCTS LIKE BLACKBERRY AM SURE YOU GUYS CAN HELP OUT PEOPLE LIKE ME WITH SITUATIONS LIKE THESE…PLEASE HELP THANKS
