The Indian government’s telecom department has suggested a workaround for accessing encrypted BlackBerry emails. The workaround involves getting unencrypted copies of emails from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server sent to an internet service provider’s monitoring system. Security agencies will be able to work with the ISP’s to obtain any information they desire from these corporate emails.
While BlackBerry corporate email is fully encrypted on a BES when moving between BlackBerrys, it remains unencrypted while it resides on the BES. “Feeding the email from the enterprise server to the ISP’s monitoring systems can, accordingly, help security agencies access the communication in pure text form,” DoT proposal said.

Even though Goldman Sachs called the BlackBerry Torch 9800 launch “underwhelming”, it turns out the device is still the number 1 selling cell phone on Amazon.com. Reports say that 150,000 units were sold in the opening weekend but it’s not clear if that includes online sales. Amazon currently has the Torch on sale for $99.99 with a new service plan and a lot of users probably grabbed the device at that price after having done a little research.
Do you own a Torch? Where did you pick it up?

It seems that when the BlackBerry Torch was in its early engineering phases, it was called the BlackBerry Tardis. There are some interesting/funny pictures of the early engineering device that features the Synaptics branding and two holes where the LED light is positioned. The second hole, while it’s most likely a proximity sensor, has me dreaming of a front-facing camera on the Torch. Considering the Torch was said to be RIM’s answer to the iPhone 4, it would be cool to see something like FaceTime but integrated into BlackBerry Messenger. A front-facing camera would also fit nicely into the branding of the Torch as “where business meets fun”. Not only could you use a front-facing camera for fun, but enterprise clients could use it for video conferencing. More images after the jump.

We recently wrote about examples of Widgets in App World and a support forums post regarding some of the UI features that can be accomplished with Widgets was called to our attention. Using CSS and HTML, it looks like Widgets can be tailored to look a lot like a native BlackBerry app but with less effort than it usually takes using the Java Development Environment. Hit after the jump to see some examples of UI elements made with the Widgets SDK, tested on OS 5.0.0.469.

The BlackBerry Bold 9780 (BlackBerry R020) is the refresh of the Bold 9700 and recently leaked training slides show us all the official specs. There isn’t anything amazing here, mostly just upgraded memory (512MB), a better camera (5MP with flash), and of course BlackBerry 6. The training slides also show some demographic info about BlackBerry users as well as how some of RIM’s products fit in their roadmap.
