Patents aren’t proof that RIM will be implementing anything but they’re fun to use as talking points. A recent patent filed by RIM shows a BlackBerry using a rotating keyboard, allowing the user to go from landscape keyboard to keypad. The schematics for the device make it look pretty ugly, but a rotating keyboard could be really useful. On the Torch for example, there are moments where you wish you could type on a physical keyboard without having to use the virtual keyboard.
Do you think the rotating keyboard idea looks cool or is it just awkward?

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is coming to Bell “this fall” which we assume means end of summer or beginning of October. While there’s no official release date or pricing, we might expect the device to be available for around $99 on a two year plan at best. For those of you on the Bell network, or in Canada looking to switch carriers and pick up a Torch, you can head over to bell and register for a notification of when it’s available.
Head over to Bell’s website and register to find out when the Torch launches.
Be sure to read out review of the BlackBerry Torch 9800.

Facebook is going increasingly mobile as a service and it recently announced that it has more than 150 million active mobile users. The mobile figures break down as follows:
The figures are a little strange as Apple said it has reached 100 million iOS devices shipped back in June and RIM has reported only 46 million BlackBerry subscribers as of the last quarterly conference call.
Now if only RIM would update the Facebook app to include at least a better friend search feature.

We haven’t heard much about what themes will look like with BlackBerry 6 and the Torch but it probably won’t allow for as much customization as we saw in OS 5. It’s not clear if theme developers will be able to customize the homescreen to the same extent, but it’s possible some experts will be able to hack their way into the files and do some cool stuff. With a recent screenshot leak of the upcoming Theme Studio, we still don’t know anything more but at least we can see it’s on its way. Hopefully we’ll see this update soon so Torch users can get their hands on some theme content.
