LinkedIn for BlackBerry Updated to 1.2 with Performance and Bug Fixes

Comments

linkedin

When we last wrote about the LinkedIn app it was updated to version 1.1 with support for the Storm, Pearl and more than 21 devices running OS 4.3 or later. Now the app has been updated to version 1.2 which according to LinkedIn focuses on “performance, battery life and resolving several issues our users were seeing with downloading connections.” The company has also made changes to how contacts are merged with the Address Book app, and other changes that should significantly reduce the battery life issues some users have reported.

While performance and bug issues are good, it would be cool to see a new feature or two. It would be awesome to see LinkedIn add the ability to scan a business card directly to your LinkedIn contacts.

torch 9800 canada launch

We last heard the Torch will be coming to Canada mid-September but it looks like end of September is more likely. A flyer going out to sales reps shows the Torch launch kicking off in Toronto on September 21st, then Vancouver on the 22nd and Montreal on the 23rd. From August 20th, to September 8th, if you’re a sales rep with one of the highest BlackBerry sales, you could win an invitation to the event where RIM is giving away a total of 75 Torch devices (25 at each launch event). Good luck!

Free Data Security and Tracking App Available in App World

Comment

data security and tracking app

There’s a free (for 1 year) data security and tracking app in App World right now that allows you to lock the device remotely and retrieve your personal contacts. These applications are fairly popular for BlackBerry and RIM has taken it upon themselves to develop their own internal data security and tracking app called BlackBerry Protect (available in Beta Zone). With BlackBerry Protect soon to be available in App World for free, it’s not clear how these apps will compete. Until then, this may be a good option.

Check out the free data security and tracking app, Superhero Solo in App World.

Also, feel free to check out SmrtGuard’s free data security app as well.

BlackBerry Partners Fund Invests in PocketGear with Potential App World Benefits

Comments

The BlackBerry Partners Fund has announced a $15 Million Series B funding in PocketGear, led by Trident Capital. PocketGear bills itself as world’s largest cross platform, open app store and content marketplace, after its acquisition of Handango.

PocketGear, Handango, and Mobihand are all part of a similar business model to sell software outside of the carrier and manufacturer channels and it’s a business that seems increasingly risky given that RIM, Apple and the big players are in the space as well. While PocketGear competes with App World, the investment could benefit the company if they can bring PocketGear’s relationships into App World. PocketGear has access to over 32,000 developer relationships and more than 140,000 paid and free titles.

Reminder: BlackBerry Torch 9800 Unlock Requires Browser Service Books

This may be an obvious reminder for some but if you’re looking to get your BlackBerry Torch unlocked, make sure your carrier has announced the device because otherwise they may not have the proper WebKit browser service books. With an unlocked Torch, you can still use the WebKit browser over a WiFi connection, but you’ll be unable to use it over a regular radio connection unless your carrier can send you the service books.

With the help of our friends at Cellfservices, we were able to narrow down the issue a little further with feedback from customers who got their Torch unlocked. Here are some more facts:
