It’s never a dull week here at BlackBerryCool. This week, the biggest news was probably the launch of App World 2.0 which features carrier and credit card billing, as well as 99 cent and $1.99 apps. This is hopefully going to really help push the number of downloads in App World and create a better app economy for BlackBerry. If more developers are making money, the platform will attract more developers which means everybody wins. Other than the App World news, there is a lot of content related to upcoming devices such as the 9670 clamshell aka the BlackBerry Oxford and the Bold 9780. Both of these devices are rocking BlackBerry 6 and it’s always fun to check out unreleased BlackBerrys. Be sure to hit the jump and check out this week in BlackBerry news. There were rumors going around for some time that the Bold 9700 would not be getting BlackBerry 6, which may have stemmed from the fact that the Bold 9780 rumors were floating around making things a little confusing. The most recent video of the Bold 9700 running BlackBerry 6 shows what it’s like using the device with the latest WebKit browser. Apparently, BlackBerry 6 runs faster on the Bold 9700 than it does on the Torch, which is actually a little disappointing. The Torch does tend to show a little lag with BlackBerry 6, especially when transitioning between homescreen tabs. In any case, it’s interesting to see the WebKit browser being used without the pinch to zoom functionality.
A new clamshell BlackBerry is on the way and we have a few more details about it leaked from some internal slides that have been going around. The device is expected to launch relatively soon with Sprint and the overview slides answer some questions about the upcoming device. The clamshell is said to have the following specs:
CDMA
5MP Camera
240×320 external display
360×400 internal display
Trackpad
There is probably a lot of market research from Sprint that says customers are looking for a clamshell BlackBerry. The same demographic that bought the Pearl Flip is probably going to love the 9670 Oxford.
It would be really interesting to see RIM’s tablet entering the enterprise market with its gold standard security and a cool new software system. Someone close to RIM has recently said that the BlackPad is designed to capitalize on RIM’s strength with corporate customers, particularly with email. The tablet will be closely integrated with the BlackBerry’s email system and will have similar security for messaging, the person said.
