twitter apps

Twitter’s Evan Williams recently blogged about the impact that smartphones and mobile users have had on the social network. Currently, mobile users have jumped 62 percent since mid-April and 16% of all new users to Twitter start on mobile. Also of interest, 46% of active users make mobile a regular part of their Twitter experience.

With respect to BlackBerry in particular, Twitter for BlackBerry accounts for 7% of total tweets as measured over the last 30 days. With Twitter growing past 145 million registered users, 7% accounts for a staggering number of Tweets. The top ten list includes:

1. twitter
2. m.twitter.com
3. SMS
4. twitter for iphone
5. twitter for blackberry
6. twitpic
7. tweetdeck
8. echofon
9. google friend connect
10. ubertwitter

It’s good to see UberTwitter on the list and it’s likely that as more users adopt smartphones, we’ll see the mobile website and SMS fall down the list as the smartphone apps climb in usage.

It seems, then, that not everybody in the world owns an iPhone…?

Seriously though, these are impressive numbers for Blackberry, whose app list is infinitely smaller than that of the “i” everything. I agree that it would be nice to see start-ups and smartphone apps climb the list of respected and well-utilized programs to keep the Twitter client itself from breaking its own back from the strain of its massive audience.
