Welcome back BlackBerry Nation. This week was a little slower in terms of content due to the long weekend but there’s still lots to catch up on. This week we talked about new apps such as Senomix Timesheets, and updated apps such as Poynt. News-wise, Videotron launched a new mobile service for Quebec residents in Canada, taking away a little more businesses from the big three. Recently, analysts from all over the Internet have been saying that RIM is dead in the water and it’s only a matter of time until they become like Palm. It’s hard to not believe them too. Sure, RIM does have 40 million or so subscribers but much of their growth is coming from the consumer market, which they’re losing ground to Android and iPhone. The latest attempts to address the fierce competition for consumers includes the BlackBerry Torch, of which analysts claim sales weren’t great, and BlackBerry 6, which even RIM modestly called “not an evolutionary leap”. But does all of this really mean RIM is dead? I recently read a great article from Alec Saunders’ blog, addressing this issue and it’s an article many of these analysts would do well reading. The Secret Weapon that RIM is working on, which could be the equivalent of a giant Death Star of doom for Apple and Google, is the QNX acquisition.

Verizon has recently deployed the Perst Lite object-oriented, open source embedded database system from McObject in BlackBerry software for service and repair technicians. The application will eventually be rolled out for use by thousands of Verizon personnel. The company has said that they have sold up to 5,000 licenses of Perst Lite to Verizon, which is a great deal for any organization.

GiveMeYourJad is a cool piece of donationware that is meant for BlackBerry users who want to manage their applications on their desktop. The software is easy to use: just put the JAD url in the proper field, click the Go button and the application is downloaded (JAD, COD and JAR files) to your computer. There are a lot of caller ID apps going around these days and as is the case in the app economy, they’re all looking to differentiate themselves. Privus Mobile has recently been updated to version 4.0 and now features voice notifications for their caller ID service. When you get an incoming text or call, Privus Mobile can be set to announce the name of the contact.
