A Few Reasons Why RIM Purchased DataViz and Documents To Go

RIM’s recent acquisition of DataViz, the makers of Documents to Go, has been confirmed with an official statement to cnet. The statement reads:

“RIM has acquired some of the assets of DataViz and hired the majority of its employees to focus on supporting the BlackBerry platform. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but the transaction was not material to RIM in the context of RIM’s financial results.”

The terms of the purchase were not disclosed because DataViz was purchased for a rumored $50 million cash. There could be a few explanations based on market factors and what we’ve been seeing in the rumor mill that would lead to RIM acquiring DataViz. They are as follows:

Poynt Updated with Better Torch Support and BlackBerry 6 Integration

Poynt has been updated to version 1.6 in App World and while there a few small feature additions, the update really focuses on Torch support and BlackBerry 6 integration. For those who downloaded Poynt when the Torch first launched, it worked but it wasn’t a build that was specifically designed for the device. The latest version runs very smoothly on the Torch and leverages some BlackBerry 6 features such as Universal Search. Some of the new features include:

  • Unified Search integration on 6.0
  • Context Menu enhancements on 6.0
  • Map Route with Google Maps
  • Rotten Tomatoes ratings
  • Added top and bottom shortcut keys “t” and “b” for lists not arranged by alphabet
  • Ability to turn weather on and off
  • Ability to set number of movie results
  • Sort movies by alphabet or rating
  • Faster GPS on 5.0 and newer devices
  • Accuweather extended 6-10 day forecast link
  • Weather improvements

Free Music, Ringtone and Beat Maker App Spinfuse Available in Beta

Spinfuse is a free loop based music sequencer, beat maker, and ringtone creator app for BlackBerry that has recently gone out as a public beta. The app is accompanied by a website that will let users exchange sounds and discuss their Spinfuse projects. Users will be able to upload and download completed songs, loops, and ringtones made with Spinfuse and rate each other’s work directly from within the Spinfuse application. The current beta release doesn’t have the website functionality but it’s cool to see the direction they’re going in.

Twitter for BlackBerry Accounts for Around 7% of Total Tweets

Twitter’s Evan Williams recently blogged about the impact that smartphones and mobile users have had on the social network. Currently, mobile users have jumped 62 percent since mid-April and 16% of all new users to Twitter start on mobile. Also of interest, 46% of active users make mobile a regular part of their Twitter experience.

With respect to BlackBerry in particular, Twitter for BlackBerry accounts for 7% of total tweets as measured over the last 30 days. With Twitter growing past 145 million registered users, 7% accounts for a staggering number of Tweets. The top ten list includes:

Michelin Rolling Out Truck Tires Dealer Locator App for BlackBerry

Michelin Americas Truck Tires is rolling out a truck tires dealer locator app for BlackBerry in the US and Canada. The app joins the existing Michelin ONCall emergency road service and online dealer service locator and brings all of them into one “Wherever You Go” offering.

The app is simple and helpful in that it gives you the location of the nearest Michelin truck tire or service provider, as well as basic information about that location. Users can also use the ONCall service directly from the app and integrates with the native BlackBerry Address Book to save retailer information.

Save the Date: RIM Q2 Fiscal 2011 Financial Results September 16th

Mark your calendar for September 16th as RIM will be holding its Q2 fiscal 2011 financial results conference call. With the launch of the Torch and rumors that sales were low and cannibalized Bold sales, it should be interesting to see what sort of financial results RIM reports.
