Jim Balsillie Shoots Back at Apple CEO Steve Jobs About PlayBook and Tablets

It’s great to see RIM firing back at Steve Jobs and not letting him get away with snide remarks about the PlayBook. As you may or may not know, Jobs had this to say about 7″ tablets: “The current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA, dead on arrival. Their manufacturers will learn the painful lesson that their tablets are too small.” In response, Jim Balsillie had this to say:

“For those of us who live outside of Apple’s distortion field, we know that 7″ tablets will actually be a big portion of the market and we know that Adobe Flash support actually matters to customers who want a real web experience. We also know that while Apple’s attempt to control the ecosystem and maintain a closed platform may be good for Apple, developers want more options and customers want to fully access the overwhelming majority of web sites that use Flash. We think many customers are getting tired of being told what to think by Apple. And by the way, RIM has achieved record shipments for five consecutive quarters and recently shared guidance of 13.8 – 14.4 million BlackBerry smartphones for the current quarter. Apple’s preference to compare its September-ending quarter with RIM’s August-ending quarter doesn’t tell the whole story because it doesn’t take into account that industry demand in September is typically stronger than summer months, nor does it explain why Apple only shipped 8.4 million devices in its prior quarter and whether Apple’s Q4 results were padded by unfulfilled Q3 customer demand and channel orders. As usual, whether the subject is antennas, Flash or shipments, there is more to the story and sooner or later, even people inside the distortion field will begin to resent being told half a story.”

The 7″ PlayBook looks like a size that makes a lot of sense. It looks like you could fit the PlayBook into a blazer pocket which would make the size very portable.

What do you think? Is 7″ a good size or do you think the PlayBook should be bigger?

Glad to see RIM firing back at Apple (even if it is over something as insignificant as the screen size of a tablet)…

7″ seems to be a good size, that will make it almost exactly double the size of the Storm. But how big is too big? That said, it’s more about pixels per inch than physical size. If RIM takes a dump on the PlayBook with a crappy resolution screen, it’s gonna FAIL just like Jobs says. If it’s a good high res screen, people will keep laughing at Jobs’ inanities.

Oh hey, while I’m here, does anyone from BBCool ever actually try to USE this site from a BlackBerry browser? It’s downright awful. Very very slow to load, nearly impossible to make comments (thanks to Disqus crap I suspect), in short it’s really poor for a site that’s supposed to be “Voice of the BlackBerry Community” to be nearly unusable on a BlackBerry.

Re: mobile use of this site, I have been wondering the same thing. Other BB community sites are much better at this. This site is near impossible to read on a BB. Not good…

unless they adapt android os or made several enhancements to playbook, dropt the price etc. the smartphone is on the early stage and I bet 3-5 yrs from now steve jobs will have a difficult time dealing with competitors and apple products and policies will need to be fixed to stay on top.

Two things: I am looking forward to the PlayBook, the size sounds just fine and it’s a BB. As others have commented, I also hope the res is outstanding. Good just won’t cut it with the haters. I will get one.
Second, I was ready to show everyone how well this site worked with os6 but every time I clicked in the comment box I was taken back to the top of the screen. The site loaded normal, which is to say, slow. But, the site did load and I was able to read it just fine. But I did have to go to desktop to comment.

7″ is the major reason I want to purchase this tablet. I think people who walk around with iPads look like loons. It’s just to big to be portable.
