While we reported that App World’s desktop storefront went live yesterday, RIM has sent out an update officially announcing it. The latest update to the App World website allows users to purchase and download apps directly from their PC. Through the BlackBerry App World storefront users can now:
- Purchase apps directly from the website
- Edit My World accounts to sync app downloads directly to the BlackBerry smartphone
- Read and write reviews and recommend items to peers
- Access purchased or downloaded apps from a computer via the My World page in the BlackBerry App World storefront
Head over to the App World site to check it out. We’re still waiting on Mac support and hopefully it will come soon.
Question: will this mean more downloads and sales for developers, or just more convenience for users?

Dear BlackBerryCool,
Not really a tip but there’s an Air Canada ad in today’s Toronto Star with a big picture of the Torch asking you to hook up to the Air Canada App. Only problem is, at least on my Torch, is that the App isn’t available for the Torch.

A little while back I wrote an article about App World vs Mobihand and their respective developer portals and John from S4BB pointed out a cool site worth mentioning. One of the biggest issues with both vendor portals is that when you’re trying to figure out how well your app is doing, you have to download CSV files and work through them to figure out what’s going on. Both vendor portals need to realize that humans work best with visualizations of data and should provide charts and graphs as per the vendor’s request.

There are a few services out there that will help you find a lost or stolen device (SmrtGuard, BlackBerry Protect, BerrySnooper). The question is: how effective are these services at finding your device? If your BlackBerry is anywhere that might not have perfect reception, you’re going to have a hard time locating it. Take the above screenshot for example. This was taken with BlackBerry Protect enabled on my Torch and my device was located at the corner of York and Cumberland, not even within the red circle that BlackBerry Protect says it is. Now, if I couldn’t find my BlackBerry and I left it at a bar, I could use the service to narrow down whether my device was at said bar or if it was at my house or office. While the exact location isn’t always necessary, you have to wonder how useful this particular features really is. So we’re asking the reader, have you ever recovered a lost or stolen device with the help of a location tracking service? Hit the poll after the jump.

Analysts are all over the place with takeover rumors and the most recent is from a UBS analyst who says RIM could be the target of a takeover by Cisco. According to analyst Phillip Huang, Cisco and RIM have more synergies than with Microsoft, and a takeover could happen if RIM’s stock gets low enough.
“Though we see RIM facing many challenges, we see timing of (the) impact of some as overstated and believe material share devaluation from current levels make RIM a potential M & A (merger and acquisition) target,” Huang wrote in a research note.
