Open Data Ottawa’s hackathon kicked off today along with the International Open Data Hackathon. Ottawa’s Open Data event is of particular importance considering it’s not only the capital of Canada, but Ottawa itself has gone through several periods of tech recession and explosion, making for a city with quite a few talented programmers.

Over 50 cities participated in today’s International Open Data Hackathon and we have coverage of the Ottawa event as well as some notes about why this event should be of particular importance to RIM.

BlackBerry PlayBook Demo’d at Tablife in Toronto

Comments

As a follow-up to the news that Rogers confirmed they’ll be selling the PlayBook, David Neale, VP of Special Projects at RIM, gave a sweet demo of the PlayBook in action. What’s interesting about the demo is that even though the multitasking is killer, it apparently isn’t yet optimized and it’s still running in single core mode. Imagine what dual core would be like?

Call-A-Human helps you get straight to a real person when placing calls to customer support. This application contains will automatically call the requested company’s 800 number and then automatically rush you through the phone menus to get you talking to a real person as fast a possible.

Also worth checking out is Ebscer’s blog where you can see speed comparisons using the app.

Put Your App and BlackBerry Product Ideas on Kickstarter

Comments

Kelvin Hulet let us know about a Universal Smartphone Mount project he started on Kickstarter and it got us thinking: why aren’t there more BlackBerry product and app ideas kicking around Kickstarter? There are a quite a few for iPhone but the BlackBerry community doesn’t seem to be interested in Kickstarter.

The BlackBerry community is constantly saying “I wish there was an app for that” and with a little funding you could get your project going. Developers could also take advantage of this service and raise money for an app they’d like to build but can’t find the monetary incentive to create. Have you ever had an idea for a BlackBerry app or product but didn’t have the investment? Try Kickstarter and let BlackBerryCool know. We’ll help you promote it and maybe throw a little cash your way.
