Rogers Changes Corporate Stance – Now Offering to Unlock Devices for $50 Fee

Until today, Rogers never offered their customers the ability to unlock their devices because, well, why should they give you the tools to go to another carrier? Here at BlackBerryCool, we’ve always supported the unlocking industry because we believe you should be able to take your smartphone wherever the best deal exists. Rogers Corporate has changed their stance on unlocking as of today and are offering to unlock your device for a $50 fee. The $50 fee is completely ludicrous considering how easy it is to find a deal online, but you have to commend Rogers on finally changing their stance. How the iPod Tax Affects the Cost of Your Smartphone in Canada

Today in Ottawa, Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, and the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, issued the following statement:

“We are here to confirm that the Harper Government will not bring in an iPod tax as part of its copyright legislation. The iPod Tax has been proposed and supported by all opposition parties.

“We simply cannot support the opposition’s massive new iPod Tax on Canadian music lovers. The iPod Tax would add up to $75 to the price of every mp3 player and smartphone on the market. It would hurt the economy, punish consumers and families, and send the wrong message during this fragile economic recovery.”

Cocky Culture Releases First Casual Game Devilish

Cocky Culture, best known for its themes, has moved into the realm of BlackBerry gaming with their first title. Devilish is a vertically scrolling jumper game that has you guiding the character Dante from from platform to platform picking up power ups and avoiding a variety of enemies such as flying demons, flaming arrows, and the sticky pools of the river styx among others. This style of casual game has always worked well on a BlackBerry as it doesn’t demand intense controls on the user’s part, and combined with solid visuals, this game should be a hit.

Ontario Premier Visits Polar Mobile Offices and Gets a Loaded Torch

With around 200 mobile app development companies based in and around Toronto, Polar Mobile is in the heart of a booming industry. The Ontario Premier, Dalton McGuinty, met with Polar Mobile and their CEO Kunal Gupta, to highlight the importance of creating jobs for the future. Whether or not you think the Premier is doing a good job, it was still funny to see Polar Mobile give him a BlackBerry Torch loaded with apps the company has developed such as The Hockey News, Maclean’s, NHLPA, TIME magazine, World Politics Review, GQ India and Shanghai Daily.

Twinkle is a free app that lets you set and keep track of upcoming and past events. The app will tell you how far away an event is, and allow you to add it to your BlackBerry calendar. Through your calendar, you can always get notifications of upcoming events by setting alerts, but Twinkle gives you a more visual way of seeing the events that are coming up.
