At Mobile World Congress, a member of RIM’s BBM team gave a brief overview of what users and developers can expect in the upcoming BBM 6.0, which is embued with the BBM Social Platform tools. The presenter also gave some interesting stats about BBM including:
- 35M+ users since January 2011
- 60% adoption for total subscribers
- 1.5M-2M new users per month
- 130% growth over the year
- 300% spike in traffic during winning goal at World Cup
The new BBM doesn’t have much in the way of UI changes, but it’s the Social Platform APIs and developer tools that are really going to improve the experience. Outside of those tools, users will be able to send more file types to each other as well as bigger files in general. In the end, it’s going to be up to the developer community to adopt these tools and make BBM a bigger part of their apps. As RIM says, there’s a viral element to leveraging BBM and your app sales could take off. From a user perspective, “viral” can often be synonymous with “annoying”, so lets hope this only improves BBM.
