More from the WMC minisite

BlackBerry Messenger is an incredibly powerful app, not in the features it offers, but in its ubiquity. There is so much potential for an IM platform with so many millions of users. RIM has announced the BBM Mobile Gifting Program, a service for carriers that allows users to use their post-paid or pre-paid account to conveniently, securely and instantly approve and pay for airtime, apps or other carrier services requested by another BlackBerry subscriber.

The service makes for some really interesting interactions on BBM. There are so many different use cases such as families giving out airtime minutes, friends exchanging and gifting apps, and more. Read more about the platform at the press release below:

Distimo Report Shows Top Free and Paid BlackBerry Apps

Comment

blackberry top paid

The most recent publication to come out of Distimo covers the major smartphone marketplaces and this report focuses on the Google Android Market and Windows Phone 7 Marketplace because they have the highest growth. It’s a little odd that Distimo would focus on these two stores considering the WP7 growth is a little contrived and still around half that of App World. Microsoft has been paying upfront royalties for developers to port their apps to WP7, which would explain a lot of the growth. Initial sales of Windows Phone 7 devices weren’t stellar, and the business case for porting apps isn’t obvious just yet. Then again, it’s possible Distimo doesn’t take any of this into consideration and is just taking the numbers at face value. Hit the jump to check out the Top Free BlackBerry apps.

Lost iPhone? – Lost passwords!

There have been several stories circulating the web about major banks, financial institutions and large corporations testing iPhone deployments, but are they secure? A German engineering firm Fraunhofer posted a video that shows how an iPhone, running the latest firmware can be easily hacked, giving the hacker access to WiFi networks, saved website logins and anything stored in the keychain file. Could this German company do the same with a password protected BlackBerry? Doubtful.
