DEVCON 2011 is confirmed for San Francisco on October 18th-20th. This year, there is plenty to talk about with the upcoming QNX OS, the PlayBook and all the different ways developers can make apps for the BlackBerry Platform. After the success of the first BlackBerry Partners Fund, RIM has created a second venture capital fund with $150M to be invested in “mobile computing” initiatives. This second fund has a more global mandate than the first fund, which saw some pretty cool acquisitions such as SocialDeck by Google. It should be interesting to see which companies get backed by this fund, which is relatively large in dollars. Hopefully RIM will be creating a third fund in the near future and keep the cash flowing to cool new companies that need it.
At Mobile World Congress, a member of RIM’s BBM team gave a brief overview of what users and developers can expect in the upcoming BBM 6.0, which is embued with the BBM Social Platform tools. Gist hasn’t been around for long, having only launched in 2008 as a free web app that let you manage personal and professional contacts from Microsoft Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Salesforce.com, among other sources.
RIM has some decent PlayBook news coming out of Mobile World Congress including confirmation that we will see two new variants of the BlackBerry 4G PlayBook in the second half of 2011. These new PlayBooks support LTE and HSPA+ high speed wide area wireless networks. After this announcement, we now have confirmation that there will be four PlayBook variants with support for WiFi, WiFi +WiMax, WiFi + LTE and WiFi + HSPA+. In addition to the WiFi and 4G connectivity, each tablet can also support:
1. Bluetooth tethering
2. Mobile hotspots (ie. a MiFiā¢, smartphone or other portable device equipped to act as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot)
3. BlackBerry Bridge
RIM and Telefonica have announced support for carrier billing, giving 280 million Telefonica subscribers across 25 countries the ability to easily purchase apps from their device. We’re not sure what the total number of carriers supporting integrated billing with App World just yet, but other carriers include TELUS and AT&T. More details in the press release below.
