If you had the chance to experience South by Southwest Interactive, the first thing that hits you is the noise. It seems almost every person in the world with a tech startup is at the show hustling and trying to be the next big thing. Popular marketing tools at the show include stickers, posters, QR codes, and cute girls with pamphlets whom some of them can’t answer basic questions about the app. One company that was making a huge push was GroupedIn. The company went further than most, buying up mobile billboards and trying to stay above the noise by pouring marketing dollars into the show. But is it really worth it?

To survive South by Southwest (SXSW) 2011, I needed mobile apps. Whether I was sampling a new group chat option, sharing contacts through Twitter or just checking an online map for directions I relied heavily on mobile apps. And so did just about everyone else, as evidenced by all of the chins stuck to chests with lighted faces. But for those of us with BlackBerry smartphones, the new and promoted apps at this event were mostly out of our reach. I lost track of how many new mobile app companies who said, “it’s available on [x], but BlackBerry is on the roadmap…”.

The App World carousel is one of the most important features in the storefront because it gives certain apps a temporary spotlight which drastically increases their downloads. A single feature can go a long way to propelling your app forward and getting some momentum. That being said, there’s a few things RIM can do with the carousel to make it better for both developers and consumers.

Toshl let us know that they’ve released their expense tracking app for BlackBerry. The app allows you to track your expenses with tags as well as a cloud sync service in case you lose your phone. The service also lets you sync between multiple devices. Toshl also lets you export your data so that you can create reports and analyze your expense data to get a better idea of how you’re spending your money.
