The BlackBerry Bold Touch has been unveiled here at BlackBerry World 2011. Even though the device isn’t finished and is still technically in beta, we thought we would write down some initial impressions to give you an idea of what to expect.

First of all, the thing everyone will love about this device is the “Liquid Graphics”. Liquid Graphics is the marketing term RIM is using to descripe the pixel density and Java code behind the homescreen and OS. The Liquid Graphics goes a long way to improving the user experience and makes the whole thing very snappy. I believe RIM said the homescreen is running at 60fps (frames per second). Scrolling between app screens is incredibly smooth and switching screens from icon to app is a very elegant process. This, probably above all features, is going to be the best part of the Bold Touch, simply because it makes using the device so pleasant. When we review the device, something we’re going to be looking for is how well that user experience is maintained after you’ve loaded around 20 apps on the device. If the device can handle a lot of apps, and still gives you that smooth experience, RIM is going to see a lot of satisfied customers.

RIM Announces Multi-Platform Enterprise Solution for Smartphones and Tablets

    Comments

RIM has announced new multi-platform management solution for enterprise. The solution will incorporate secure device management for iOS, Android, and tablets all managed from convenient web-based console.

We’ve been hearing a lot about multi-platform deployments gaining steam in enterprise and this looks like a good tool for IT departments and CTOs to manage a multi-platform deployment. The web console will help manage and distribute software, manage policies, inventory and security services.

This new solution is from RIM’s acquisition of Ubitexx, a company that specializes in multiplatform mobile deployment software. They make a point of mentioning that there are many more security options available on the BlackBerry platform but I still find it interesting that RIM has listened to their CTO clients and embraced multiplatform deployments. RIM intends to launch this service for general availability summer 2011.

We knew it was coming but RIM has announced a Facebook app for the PlayBook. The app features the ability to view and add Friends, seamlessly watch photos and video, view and interact with the news feed, get notifications and more. Since the PlayBook has full web fidelity, it seems a little odd that someone would need a Facebook app, rather than just bookmark it in their browser. Nonetheless, there are surely some who will really appreciate it.

In terms of impressive specs, the Bolds are built on a new performance-driven platform featuring a 1.2 GHz processor, Liquid Graphics touch screen, and support for high speed 4G/HSPA+ wide area wireless networks. These smartphones also feature NFC, APIs for augmented reality and 720p HD video recording and playback. Expect these devices to launch early this summer.
