This may not be directly BlackBerry related but a lot of BlackBerry users probably have iPod Nanos for music. Even though you may have your music stored on your BlackBerry, you have to admit that it’s easier to jog and exercise with a Nano versus something like a Torch. Deckster is a really cool product we’ve come across that turns your iPod Nano into a watch that can play music, show the time, and do everything that an iPod Nano can do. The design is what really sets this device apart from the competition too. The Deckster is designed around a Pop+Lock⢠System that is reminiscent of a cassette deck. The Deckster opens and closes in a smooth motion for easy insertion or removal of the Nano.
Two exciting items of excitement to report from Bplay HQ this week. First off, they’ve got one of Magmic’s newest themes called Space: 1999. I’ve been running it on my 9700 for the last week and a half, and I absolutely love it. I’ve also tested this them on other devices including the Torch 9800, and it runs beautifully. It takes space inspired animations and comic book style art to the next level. It goes completely against your standard Zen and Today style themes, and adds an element of artsiness that seems to have become rare in the world of BlackBerry themes. We’re not all suit-dummies, you know. Fans of the past ‘Propaganda‘ theme from Magmic will definitely love this theme.
Secondly (but not less importantly), Bplay sent out an email to all of its subscribers letting them know that Glu Mobile, makers of Call of Duty: Black Ops Mobile and Family Feud Mobile, has slashed their prices on a number of their top selling titles. Some of those games include the aforementioned ones, Blur Racing, World Series Poker, and many more. This sale will last throughout the month on June.
Foursquare let us know that they’ve updated the app with some minor fixes that should help anyone who’s experiencing issues with the app. Specifically, some users have reported that their foursquare app has stopped working (being unable to make requests, like loading venues). This update officially resolves this issue. Additionally they made a couple small fixes along the way.
RIM is still killing it in Canada ahead of Apple and Google and with 42% of the smartphone market, ahead of Apple’s 31% and Android’s 12.2%. Nokia is barely a player with only 6.4% of the market and Windows has even less with 5.1% of the smartphone market. The data comes from a new report on the Canadian mobile industry from market research firm ComScore Inc. In terms of smartphone adoption in general, Canada is at 32.8%, which is a little higher than the US which is at 32.2%. Europe is doing really well with smartphone penetration with numbers such as United Kingdom (40.8%), Spain (40.2%) and Italy (38.3%) in terms of smartphone adoption. But then again, Europe is a Nokia-based society and nobody is really taking that company seriously as a smartphone. It’s more like a “semi-intelligent phone”.
Okay, maybe a cliched April Fool’s prank but still really funny.
Wakeful is a great alarm clock app that wakes you up with a male or female voice giving you the time of day as well as the day’s news headlines. The app has some great features at the moment such as daily stock updates as well as news tailored to your location. What we’re most excited about is Wakeful as a platform. Imagine being able to customize the app with your site or app’s traffic or download statistics. Ideally, you could also be able to feed custom RSS links into the app and get top headlines from sites of your choosing.
Random question: do you use the male or female voice? We always assumed the female voice was used most of the time because it’s more pleasant to wake up to, but we had a BBCool reader say that his wife won’t let him use the female voice because she doesn’t like waking up to the sound of another woman in their bedroom. Needless to say we laughed our asses off while rolling around on the ground.
