BlackBerry Smart Card Reader Achieves FIPS 140-2 Certification Level 3

Comments

The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader has been around for some time but it doesn’t get much attention because it’s not a consumer product. Governments and high security organizations use the smart card reader for identification and RIM has recently announced that the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader™ has achieved FIPS 140-2 certification level 3 – the highest certification achieved by any wireless smart card reader on the market. This new level of certification should make the smart card reader a must-have with Homeland Security, the Department of Defense and other governments abroad.

Along with the new certification comes some cool new features such as tamper evidence and self destruction of critical security parameters upon device breach. Previous features of the smart card reader include the ability to lock the smartphone and computer when the smart card is not in proximity.
