BlackBerry Blog Hacked in Response to RIM Statement – Hackers Threaten to Reveal Employee Info

BlackBerry Website hack

RIM recently released a statement saying the company will company with The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act in light of the London riots. Compliance with the act could mean RIM would be intercepting and handing over relevant communications. Police have said that BBM was used to coordinate much of the looting and riots and these messages could lead to arrests.

For those unaware of the riots, it seems to have been caused by the death of Mark Duggan, an alleged drug dealer who was shot by a special gang and drug division of Scotland Yard. Duggan also apparently used BBM to send a final message to his girlfriend. He wrote, “The Feds are following me.” Handing over Duggan’s BBM messages to police could also reveal a lot about the individual whose death apparently inspired the riots.

The hacker group TeaMp0isoN targeted RIM’s official blog and left the following message on the site:

First of all, can you believe these model numbers? RIM couldn’t have made them more confusing. I have been writing about BlackBerry for years and I simply cannot remember what device they’re talking about when they say 9850, 9860 or 9810. The 98xx doesn’t even represent the same device anymore. You used to be able to write 97XX and you knew the 9700 and 9780 both looked the same, but not anymore. From now on, we’re going to refer to the devices by name only. The following seem most appropriate:

Bold 9900 = Bold Touch
Torch 9810 = Torch 2
Torch 9850/9860 = Storm 3

Recently, we attended the BlackBerry 7 Fan Night in Toronto and we had an opportunity to get some quality time with RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry 7 devices. There are a lot of things to say about these devices with some Pros and Cons for each of them. Generally, these devices are everything we saw last year but turned up around 40%. The user experience is faster, with homescreen switching and app launching all happening much faster (Liquid Graphics), and the web browsing experience is also much faster. The Torch 9850 and 9860, aka the Storm 3, seems to be RIM bringing back the all-touch experience (with trackpad), and it’s probably the most risky of the BlackBerry 7 devices.

smarter apps

We’re in New York City this week getting ready for the BBM Hackathon that will go from Thursday the 11th to Friday the 12th. A little while back we put up a post asking for developers to send us their app ideas that would leverage the BBM Social Platform. The winning app idea would won a decent prize pack including:

  • A flight to NYC and hotel for during the hackathon
  • $500 spending cash
  • A BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900

The winning developer is Paul Dumais of Smarter Apps and the app idea is really killer. We don’t want to reveal what the app does because we’ve been told that the app will be fully coded and made available to App World during the hackathon. Stay tuned because we’ll be revealing the app in a few days and it’s going to change the way you use BBM.
