Alec Saunders is no stranger to BlackBerryCool and the tech community. We’ve long followed Alec’s blog and have reposted some of his content that deals with BlackBerry and the smartphone industry. Alec is also an entrepreneur and it will be great to get someone at RIM who understands the needs of startups and small businesses, which seem to be really powering the smartphone app business. More after the jump.
We first met Alec Saunders while looking at his company iotum. The BlackBerryCool headquarters is in Ottawa, Canada, where Alec lives and our writer at the time was Steve St. Pierre. Back in 2007, Steve made a visit to iotum’s offices to discuss their new Talk-Now application and how it would revolutionize the way we look at our devices. See the above video.

Another point we bonded with Alec over was the Seesmic story. While everyone in the media took this as a negative for RIM, we both sat back and knew that it wasn’t RIM’s problem.
On that note, Alec sort of speaks to the benefits of the BlackBerry platform in his interview with the DevBlog saying: “there’s no reason why developers shouldn’t be able to make a great living just by serving BlackBerry customers. And my team’s job is to make it as attractive, easy and fun as possible for developers to build for the BlackBerry platform – smartphones and tablet alike.”
Check out Alec’s blog post announcing his move over to @blackberrydev.
Also, be sure to check out this interview with Alec about his new role.
Congratulations, Alec! Help this company kick ass!
