Another Poorly Timed BlackBerry Outage: Are You Experiencing Issues?

The last time we talked about a BlackBerry outage was just after the last earnings call when the share price began to dip again. This most recent outage has been very widespread and has been going on for around 3 days now. This outage also comes at a bad time with the recent announcement of the iPhone 4S.

RIM has released the following statement about why the outage occurred:

“The messaging and browsing delays being experienced by BlackBerry users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina were caused by a core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure. Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested. As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and we will continue to keep you informed.”

The issue has been spreading and it seems to now be affecting users in not just the EMEA, but also Canada, the US and Latin America. Personally, my BlackBerry hasn’t received any emails since 6AM and it is running on the TELUS BIS network in Ottawa, Ontario.

Are you experiencing issues? Let us know where you are.

First of all, I want to say i love the Torch. It’s Rim that i am having issues with.
Last Saturday, the Network went out (eastern US), It was restored when Rim said it would be. by 12Noon.  Now this morning I check my emails, and …no emails!.  I checked here at Crackberry to find out that there is another blackout !  I live in Eastern PA.
I called Rim, and was told that they are aware of the problem .It started at Midnight this morning.  It is now 9:44 AM , and they do not know when service will be restored!
I was told they (Rim) are aware of the problem,,Duh!  but no time mentioned as to when the service may be connected again. I surely hope this is not a trend.  I switched from my iPhone4 when the 9810 arrived, and overall, although not exactly an iPhone, it does have all the bells and whistles I need. Primary among those options, are a good , steady, RELIABLE EMail program thru the equally reliable Blackberry Service!  I am quite surprised by this turn of events, and I do hope Rim gets a grip on this problem, and handles it so that we may get on with our day-to day important Mail and message services!
    Any comments would be appreciated!

I love my Torch but I hate RIM servers that are constantly having issues. They should free us from the control of their servers. I might be changing my BB soon if things keep the same.

Mississippi user – no service since 7:30 am.  Stuff like this is why iphones are selling.

North Carolina User – no email since early this morning.

Same here… I love my 9930 and I’m without email since 10am EST. I know someone inside who told me that they are increasing the bandwidth of the core infrastructure to restore the service of the affected users, but the main problem is that midday is the busiest time and it should take a while now to get my emails restored. I believe that every cloud has its problems…

Haven’t received anything since last night and I’m in Saint Lucia in the Caribbean.

Yes – I’m in Canada, and it has been weird – BBM was down periodically this morning for all the people in my company, and other apps that connect to a custom service book on the BIS infrastructure can’t get data at all.  This has got to be much more than a backlog problem….

As far as I’m aware this is the first set of Blackberry outages.  Who’s to say the same thing won’t happen with an IPhone.
Sounds like a bit of self rationalisation to get an IPhone to me.
