The last time we talked about a BlackBerry outage was just after the last earnings call when the share price began to dip again. This most recent outage has been very widespread and has been going on for around 3 days now. This outage also comes at a bad time with the recent announcement of the iPhone 4S.

RIM has released the following statement about why the outage occurred:
“The messaging and browsing delays being experienced by BlackBerry users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina were caused by a core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure. Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested. As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and we will continue to keep you informed.”
The issue has been spreading and it seems to now be affecting users in not just the EMEA, but also Canada, the US and Latin America. Personally, my BlackBerry hasn’t received any emails since 6AM and it is running on the TELUS BIS network in Ottawa, Ontario.
