Polar Mobile has been doing an amazing job signing up new media companies onto its mobile platform. It seems whenever Polar launches something, it’s a hundred new apps across all platforms. The company has just announced a $6 million funding round led by Georgian Partners. The new funding joins more than $3 million invested to-date from private investors and is being used to expand globally and launch MediaEverywhere. There aren’t many details on MediaEverywhere, but it seems to be an HTML5-based content solution across all platforms including mobile and desktop.

There’s an increasing need for innovative marketing solutions for mobile apps as the number of these apps increases and discoverability decreases. The answer to marketing apps effectively is far beyond traditional marketing such as advertising and traditional media outreach. Marketing apps has to come from good technology and implementation. AppCarousel is an interesting marketing approach because it takes the success of carousel features and gives that experience to carriers, brands and developers that want a better way to showcase their apps.

One of Lisa and my favorite pieces of technology spotted at CES was tucked away in the Venetian. Though most of the action during the show is found at the Las Vegas Convention Center, you can find the obscure and sometimes scrappier start-ups in the neighboring hotel ballrooms. Powertrekk is a charger that uses a “PowerPukk” which holds a sodium silicate. As the water passes through the pukk, it produces a hydrogen gas. The gas then passes through a membrane, producing electricity to fuel the internal 1500 mAh battery and power your device via the USB port. Each pukk will fuel the internal 1500 mAh battery about two times.

The City of Ottawa, Canada, is dealing with a publicly funded transportation chief that won’t release data to the tax payers funding them. In this case, the GPS data broadcasted by busses in Ottawa is being held hostage by the transportation bureaucracy, and your city could face something similar.
