Japan’s largest carrier NTT Docomo is rolling out their real time voice translation system called Hanashite Hon’yaku. Able to translate between Japanese and English, Mandarin and Korean, the new system will be rolling out support for other languages later in the month.
The system is able to translate voice after a brief pause and provides a text transcript after for reference. It processes the voice off the phone making it possible to translate even low quality voice samples from landlines.
Alcatel Lucent is developing a competing product for launch shortly and will be geared towards european clients with support most euro languages and Arabic.
