When Sarah Northway first wrote to us about her post-apocalyptic, turn-based zombie game Rebuild, we were curious to know about her story and how she found the porting process to PlayBook. Rebuild is a game created using Adobe AIR, and RIM has put a lot of effort into making sure its BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR is a solid product that would allow developers to create compelling games with. It turns out that RIM is doing a great job and according to Sarah, porting Rebuild to the PlayBook was “extremely easy”. The entire process from setup to the game being available in App World took all but a few days, and according to Sarah the iOS version was “still waiting for review a week later”. Read more about her experience porting to PlayBook below.

The BlackBerry 10 Jam conference just got a whole lot sweeter. At the conference, RIM will be giving developers a free, limited edition BlackBerry 10 developer prototype device to test their apps on. This move makes a lot of sense from a developer perspective, as it will allow them to make sure their apps run smoothly on the device, without having to wait for RIM to release the final product. We’re looking forward to this conference and we can’t wait to see devs porting their apps over to these dev phones right away. Who knows, maybe these dev phones will become a status symbol, since they’re limited edition and all. Oh and if you’re a hater, please read the following words carefully: this. is. a. prototype. Not. the. real. deal. Got it?

RIM is a killer company to work for as the company is in transition to a new OS and generally, a new consumer-focused smartphone/tablet company. Also, with the QNX acquisition, who knows what cool fields the company might be making headway in. On March 27th, RIM, as well as companies Desire2Learn, Procom and Skybound Research, will be hosting a Tech Recruitment Event along with Communitech, to fill some 1,300 tech roles in the Waterloo Region.

The most annoying thing that people do with Foursquare is broadcast their boring errands on the service, and worse, publish them on Twitter. Nobody cares that you’re at Walmart right now! The only time you’re allowed to checkin on Foursquare is if a) you’re at a party and want your friends to see and come, b) it’s a special event or c) you’re doing it for the badge. Otherwise, stop telling everyone that you’re getting gas at Esso. My life is filled with enough boring minutiae and I don’t need yours too. Anyways, here’s a great prank to get back at everyone checking in to their boring lives.

There are quite a few alarm clocks out there but Get Set – Get Up! alarm clock app for PlayBook has a unique spin. The alarm provides increasingly shorter snooze periods and clear indications of how much time is left so you’re gradually prepared to wake up. The app also features ticker text and/or voice notes to remind you what you have to do that day. This really helps for those that like to set the alarm early knowing it takes them a while to “come to”.

It’s pretty amazing to think BlackBerryCool has been writing about RIM’s products for 7 years with over 10,000 posts on the subject. The readers have been incredibly active as well, logging over 65,000 comments on the site. I thought a great birthday gift to us all would be to hand pick some articles over the past 7 years that give an idea of how the company has changed and bring back some of that great BlackBerry nostalgia. This isn’t about “the good ol days”, in fact, I’d gladly use my 9900 over the old 8700, but it’s about the evolution of a technology product. It’s rare that anything lasts 7 years on the web, let alone the 28 years since RIM was founded. Click through and read some of the blog posts we’ve done over the past 7 years.
