It might be time for your thumbs to take a little, tiny rest. It’s been a while since we’ve heard from our pal Russell Shaw from BBHub. He’s set up shop over at ZDNet, and has come through yet again with another great look at a brand new BlackBerry patent.
He’s called this patent a “big one”, and I think I’d agree as it is looking to cut down on the amount of thumbstrokes by introducing auto-capitalizing, auto-punctuation, and more. Here’s the patent’s abstract. You can check out the full features here.
A hand-held electronic device with a keyboard, thumbwheel, display and associated software is optimized for use of the device with the thumbs. The associated software has a plurality of features to optimize efficient use of the limited keyboard space and encourage the use of the device by thumb-based data entry through the thumbwheel and/or through a combination of minimal number of keystrokes.

It’s about time that Generation Y (those born 1975-95) are getting some facetime. Not to slight those X’ers out there, it’s just that come on, you’ve had your time in the limelight. The children are the future.
And according to this article from BusinessEdge.ca, the children are also the one’s who’re driving the future of mobile TV, especially with the help of services like movy.tv from Toronto-based Movidity Inc. Oh, and we should mention that it’s on its way to the BlackBerry world real soon.
At first glance, it looks a lot like YouTube, with short videos that have been uploaded by members (membership is free.) However, as the company points out, it has proprietary technology that turns your content into “media objects” that can play on any Java-enabled cellphone, and, very soon it says, on BlackBerries.

Finally. I’d just like to say that I’m not a complete Treo-detractor, it’s just that I’ve known some stubborn Palm adopters who’re close-minded (or were, at least) to the ways of the BlackBerry. News out of SeekingAlpha has some results of a couple of tests that were put together regarding the current smartphone market. One of which shows RIM’s smartphone market share at 37% in January of 2007, while Palm’s share continued to decrease down to 30%.
Looking at the next 90 days, RIM again wins in the battle for market share, with 27% of future buyers saying the Blackberry is the smart phone they plan to buy – up 3-points since October.
In contrast, Palm looks like it’s been hit with a technical, as Treo planned sales plummet 9-points to just under 14%.

Hands down, one of my favourite BlackBerry-related applications is BlackBerry Viewer from Ottawa’s Idokorro – an app for your PC that displays your BlackBerry’s screen on the desktop. I’m sure I’ve mentioned before that I use it all the time, mainly for screenshots for BBCool reviews, but it can be used for demonstrations and whatnot, as well.
Idokorro’s been extra nice for the last little while and offering BlackBerry Viewer for free. Users who’ve got their hands on it already can still use the app for free until January of 2008, or pay $25 for an upgraded version.
However, if I’ve convinced you of it’s greatness or you’re being a skeptic, you can now grab it for a 30-day free trial from Idokorro’s site. Once you’re absolutely convinced of it’s value, you can pick it up from Handango.

Thanks to our good pal Alec over at iotum for directing us to this. Google is soon to be a massive media king, so why not relent and let them take over your BlackBerry before they force themselves on you (or hire really big dogs to attack, that wouldn’t be good, either).
Jim Courtney over at the Skype Journal has put together a review of all of the Google apps available for your device. We’re talking everything: Google Search, Google Maps, GMail, Google News and GTalk. Check it out here.

Hey pals. While the BlackBerry world is busy getting prepared for WES, we thought we’d take the opportunity to remind you about our weekly contest. A trend that’s slowly coming more and more into the BlackBerry sphere is the use of your device in more social atmospheres as opposed to it being all about business. For this week’s contest, we’re asking you how you use your BlackBerry in a social setting.
Winner this week will walk away with an absolutely free full-version of Ascendo DataVault – a BlackBerry Cool approved application (and a $29.95 USD value). Get your answer to me before Thursday night at midnight. Good luck.
