Rick Segal is one of the co-founders of Fixmo Tools, an app company that packages a bunch of utilities to help improve your BlackBerry. The apps do a variety of things such as change your profiles based on your Calendar events, edit your emails before they’re sent, manage your memory, track your battery power and more.
According to Segal, “Canada is the best place on the planet to start a business,” as government programs available to entrepreneurs in Canada are amazing, and give a competitive advantage. One such program is scientific research and development credits, which can go along way to cutting costs on developing new technologies. I’m not sure if Fixmo Tools qualifies for these credits, but with the right guy behind the proposal, you could probably fit anything into that program.

Didiom Pro is available free in App World and it has some cool new features to connect your home computer’s audio and your BlackBerry. To use Didiom Pro, you have to download their desktop app for PC, and sign up for an account. The free account gives you 5 tracks, and unlimited access to your library costs only $0.99 per month or $9.99 annually. I think more companies should use a free app with a small fee outside of App World to drive down prices.
Check out Didiom in App World and let us know what you think.

When I was in Scandinavia meeting with Opera, along with the lucky BBCool reader who won the trip, I got to talking with them about RIM’s acquisition of Torch Mobile. The guys at Opera are really smart and gave me some insight into what a browser really is. A browser is really a combination of 50-80 mini apps, that all serve various functions such as understanding the HTML/CSS. WebKit is a core technology within the browser. There are other core technologies that can be used to build a Browser: Presto, Gecko, Trident etc.
The acquisition of Torch Mobile meant that RIM now controls a few of the developers who are contributors to WebKit’s source code. The Webkit platform, while Open Source, doesn’t allow just anyone to manipulate the base code. There is a relatively small group of contributors from Apple, Nokia, Google, various Universities, and now RIM.

I was on the phone with Philip Gronvold, US Manager of Business Development at Opera Software recently, and he told me Opera Mini will be available in App World during this quarter. Apparently, the news is already public and was casually slipped into a press release somewhere, but I can’t find it from Google. Maybe an adept reader will find the news and comment a link.
This news is really interesting because it highlights one of the major advantages of going with BlackBerry versus Apple. RIM doesn’t fear competition, they embrace it. Apple would never let any third party application compete with a first party application such as a browser. It would be really incredible if RIM opened up more of their APIs to Opera, allowing them to integrate more into the BlackBerry platform.

It seems we’re getting much closer to the Pearl 9100’s release date as more pics are getting leaked. The latest pics show the About screen, giving us some details about what OS the device is currently working with (OS 5.0.0.426) and confirming that the Pearl 9100 does in fact use 3G bands. Rumor has it that the device will go to T-Mobile, WIND, Rogers and AT&T, meaning lots of customers are going to get their hands on this one. More pics after the jump.

Verizon have announced that VZ Navigator has been updated to version 5.0 with a new UI, Facebook integration, real time traffic info, and voice command search. The new traffic feature is particularly cool because users can opt in to anonymously share their location and speed, allowing for more accurate VZ Navigator traffic reporting.
VZ Navigator 5.0 will roll out on the BlackBerry Curve 8530 to start, with more device support in the coming weeks. Current subscribers with a VZ Navigator 5.0-capable device will get a message the next time they launch the service, prompting them to upgrade to the new version. VZ Navigator is available for $9.99 a month for unlimited access or $2.99 for a one-day/24 hour use on certain devices.

Foursquare have been making some really awesome partnerships lately and they’re coming up with some interesting ways of bringing location-aware content to BlackBerry users. Recently, foursquare announced a partnership with Metro news, where users can get location-relevant Metro content sent to their device. Today, foursquare announced a partnership with Bravo, to bring television and location-aware BlackBerry users together.
The partnership will mean that a Bravo-enhanced version of Foursquare will launch, allowing users to play along with Bravo shows by checking in at restaurants, bars, and other venues to win badges, physical prizes and other incentives. Foursquare users will find special Bravo badges as they visit the more than 500 selected Bravo locations across the U.S.
This is a really cool idea and it has some interesting implications for reality TV. Imagine the Amazing Race, but anyone can compete using Foursquare. That would be a blast.
