Mobile Telephony of Serbia customers will now be able to get their hands on the BlackBerry Pearl 8100, BlackBerry Curve 8300, and BlackBerry 8800. Mobile Telephony of Serbia, otherwise known as mt:s, is offering the phones with the help of Alcatel-Lucent, who have participated in the setup of many of RIM’s expansions. All three phones were already available in the area through a partnership between VIP and Vodafone, but choices are always good.

BerryReview recently posted about Michael Smalls, a BlackBerry theme designer who has released over a hundred BlackBerry 8100, 8300, and 8800 themes for free. The design of the website leaves quite a lot to be desired, but the themes themselves are well done and there is a lot of variety. If none of the themes are entirely to your liking, you can even contact Smalls to have one personally designed for a $3-$10 fee depending on complexity. Fair warning: the site absolutely requires Internet Explorer on a PC to download the themes. There’s always Gemblock, who also does a lot of free themes.
Scanbuy has announced that their 2D barcode scanning app for cameraphones is now available for BlackBerry. Using their software, you can now take pictures of particular barcodes similar to those being worked into airports with your Pearl or Curve to access related content like music, pictures and information. They’ve already got a bunch of partners doing some pretty interesting things with the technology, such as the Paris Metro which delivers point of interest and transit information using the barcodes, and Codilink who’s using it to deliver and redeem coupons. There are a lot of great opportunities for this kind of stuff, that’s for sure.
RIM has announced the launch of the BlackBerry Curve 8300 in Uganda in conjunction with MTN, one of the largest telecom companies in that area. MTN will be offering two BlackBerry services in the area: Enterprise Server, which offers Lotus Domino, Microsoft Exchange, and Novell GroupWise integration; and Internet Service, which offers up to 10 POP3 or IMAP4 email servers including Gmail and Yahoo. RIM has been expanding all around the region, so this new release doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
RIM continues its spread, today with another three-pronged release in Qatar. Following Ghana’s suit, Qtel is releasing the BlackBerry 8100, BlackBerry 8300 and BlackBerry 8800 to cover all the main bases, and set a good foundation for the later incremental upgrades. Qatar Airways is already lined up to deploy BlackBerrys to their roaming workforce, so Qtel’s got some good business right off the bat. RIM announced today the launch of their three flagship devices by MTN Ghana. When it comes to maiden national launches, it’s surprisingly rare to see all three (the BlackBerry 8800, 8100 and 8300) all brought together at once, which is too bad, since the three cover the whole range of customer demand really nicely. RIM realizes that Africa is a promising emerging market, and possibly second only to China. Considering the game in China is now entirely in the carrier’s hands and ostensibly slowing, it makes sense that BlackBerry starts setting its sights on the next new market by making aggressive releases like this one.
