bbPlaces lets you place your BlackBerry pictures

Comments

bbPlacesJosep’s been testing out the beta for a new geotagging project called bbPlaces, which lets you directly upload pictures taken on your BlackBerry to Google Maps, where your GPS unit will place the photo where you took it. bbPlaces even provides a rating system for when you visit photos of places uploaded by others, as well as directions on how to get there in the first place. Although it might be pigeonholed to the 8310 and 8130 (the only BlackBerrys with both camera and on-board GPS), and the app is natively written in Spanish, it’s still great to see stuff like this getting developed. The site includes English instructions, so give it a shot and let us know how it goes.

Earthcomber for BlackBerry

Comments

EarthcomberThe folks at Earthcomber, the free location-based app for mobile, have let know that they’re going to be busting out a BlackBerry client. Of course, stuff with integrated GPS is on the list, like the 8310 and 8800, but Earthcomber also sports a self-spotting function which lets you designate the city you’re in if you don’t have GPS handy. The program lets you browse through categorized services, like banks, ATMs, restaurants and lists results in order of proximity. Also, they’ve got a proximity detection service which alerts you when buddies are nearby. It’s got a clean interface, and you can’t beat free. Sadly, this is a U.S.-only thing right now, but we’ll be keeping our eye out for a Canadian release real soon.

New Otterboxes!

Comments

OtterBox PearlAfter scoping out BerryReview, we got wind that OtterBox has got some new goods on the way: a Curve and a Pearl case. These are following the lead of the 8800 case we reviewed not too long ago, and it’s great to see the form factor continuing. These cases have 3 layers – clear plastic for covering the keys and screen, followed by a hard plastic shell, then a rubberized skin on top for impact absorption and grip. OtterBox does great stuff, and you can get your preorders now at $49.99 each. Expect them to ship around October 31st.

MobileTracker 1.4 released

Comments

MobileTrackerThe BlackBerry GPS app, MobileTracker, has recently come out with a new version with a bunch of new features, including elevation tracking and coordinate geotagging for pictures. With GPS getting integrated into camera-toting BlackBerrys like the BlackBerry 8130 and BlackBerry 8310, this app is a great way to get the best of both worlds. I’m a sucker for stuff like Panoramio, which lets you share your pictures on Google Earth, which MobileTracker is designed to work with. If you’re interested, you can pick it up over here.

AT&T’s BlackBerry 8310 released

Comments

AT&T 8310Well, it didn’t come out on the 4th., and not on the 11th., but it looks like it’ll be out today. Honest. Obviously AT&T is having a few issues getting this one out the door, but that’s usually the case. The GPS-enabled BlackBerry 8310 has already been released in a few other places, but we’ve yet to see it in the stylish inverse keypad and deep red paint job. Some folks have already been able to get their hands on the new device, and the online store is listing the Curve as featuring GPS, so we reckon an official announcement is well on the way. We’ve got the official announcement here

…and behind the jump.

Garmin to launch Brazilian mapping for BlackBerry

Comments

BrazilLast week at Futurecom, TIM Brazil and Garmin announced that they’ll be launching a mapping solution for the BlackBerry 8800 and their newly-released BlackBerry 8310 before the year is out, covering over 70 cities across the country. Garmin is a top-shelf name in GPS, and there’s no doubt that they’ll pump out some solid software for our readers down south.
