Playbook owners were greeted with a small update today, bringing the current BlackBerry Playbook OS to v2.0.1.358. The free update can be downloaded over-the-air by either clicking on the update notification or going to settings then update software.

The Royal Canadian Mint produces all of Canada’s coins as well as it offers gold and silver refinery and assay services. Given its status as a leader in producing currency, the Mint has launched a challenge for a new product it calls MintChip. MintChip aims to be the next generation of digital currency. With MintChip, users can upload money to any electronic device, whether it be a smartphone, USB stick, laptop, tablet or some cool future device we don’t know about. Transactions can be as high as you want to as little as a penny. If you’re a developer, you need to sign up for the MintChip Challenge, and create an app that showcases the power of digital transactions using MintChip. Also, you could win a huge piece of gold!

There’s a lot of buzz around the game Draw Something, especially as the developers OMGPOP were acquired by Zynga for reportedly $200M or more. The game is fun, addictive and while there isn’t a BlackBerry version, PlayBook and Android tablet users can check out Sketch With Friends. The game is just like Draw Something and in fact, when you think about if Zynga were to build Draw Something themselves, they’d probably name it “with friends” too. The cross-platform aspect of this game is a huge plus over Draw Something as users can compete against platforms too.

If you’ve ever wished that your home town was one of the levels on a game like Super Mario Bros, then your wish has come true. Augmented reality firm Borglar uses your smartphone camera, plus geolocation, to turn any town into a game. They can set tokens and mystery items pretty much anywhere you point your phone. You have to get out, search and discover and then you can claim the various items. Gather enough tokens and you start to earn local discounts or deals.

RIM is hosting a BlackBerry developer jam session for developers where you can meet BlackBerry experts and develop a killer app. BlackBerry devs are there to help you implement NFC in your app or help it go viral. Also, developers can bring their best app ideas and pitch it for a free BlackBerry PlayBook. There doesn’t seem to be any real restrictions, so even if your idea is “port my existing app” you’ll probably walk away with a free tablet. Android devs should definitely head over as the BlackBerry Jam Session is right near the Google Village too.
