Foursquare Global Hackathon Hacks Live Including Zsquare for iPhone #4sqhackathon

Last weekend foursquare held a global hackathon where developers all over the world sat down with the foursquare API to see what they could come up with. The results were pretty awesome and BlackBerryCool was at the Ottawa event checking out the local talent. There were a couple awesome projects on the go including a framework for developing foursquare applications, and a game called Zsquare for the iPhone. More after the break.

RIM Announces BlackBerry Java SDK Beta for BlackBerry 7

Hot on the heels of the BlackBerry 9900 series announcement, comes the Java SDK beta for BlackBerry 7 OS. The SDK takes advantage of the advanced hardware found under the hood of the new Bold Touch such as the magnetometer, NFC, video capture, and Open GL .

Scheduled for release at the end of May, the SDK also has some new APIs on the software side of things like Unified Search, maps, menu items, multimedia, barcodes and options.

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 are slated for release summer 2011, this SDK update will allow developers to optimize their apps for the powerful new device.

An Overview of OS 6.1, Next Generation of Super Apps, BlackBerry Platform Development and More

At the BlackBerry Developer Day RIM had several slides for developers that did everything from outline the BlackBerry Platform at large, to some specifics about OS 6.1 and the roadmap for 2011. From the slides, we can see that RIM sees the next generation (read OS 6.1) of apps will leverage the following:

  • Super App status
  • BBM Social Platform
  • Near Field Communication (NFC)
  • Augmented Reality
  • Enhanced Map APIs
  • Barcode APIs

It’s great that RIM is opening up these APIs and features because they will not only complement existing apps, but some developers will find ways of using 1 or 2 of these features to create an excellent app for the BlackBerry Platform. Click through for more slides and info you may have missed.
