Apple is Having Problems With Siri in Scotland

Apple’s latest Siri product is pretty cool for hands-free usage of the device but the company is having a hard time getting it to work in Scotland. The Scottish accent is difficult for humans to understand and it turns out it’s nearly impossible for computers to figure it out too. In the end, most Scots end up smashing the phone in a blind rage.

CES 2012: Griffin Technology Shows Off iPhone Cases With Built-in Vinyl

Griffin Technology is at CES showing off their latest iPhone cases which are made from an actual vinyl record. The cases are made from a record so if you had a needle, you would be able to play some of the tracks made to use the case. Griffin partnered with Jack White from the White Stripes and Third Man to get these to market. Pretty cool.

RIM Not Named in Class-Action Lawsuit Against Carrier IQ, Manufacturers and Carriers

Recently, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Carrier IQ, manufacturers and carriers. The defendants in the case include Apple, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, Samsung and Motorola but does not include RIM. RIM has been open about the fact that it does not authorize Carrier IQ to collect data on BlackBerry devices nor has it ever authorized the carrier to do so pre-sale. Perhaps it has something to do with RIM’s enterprise clients needing privacy that the policy has trickled down to the consumer, unlike other smartphone manufacturers who want to learn more about their clients.

Why Do You Care What Smartphone Someone Chooses?

Have you ever been at a bar or dinner with your friends and someone sees you with a BlackBerry and says something like “you have a BLACKBERRY?!” like you just pulled out a KKK membership card? It goes both ways too. BlackBerry and Android users are just as annoying when it comes to mocking or questioning someone’s smartphone choice. People have started to internalize their smartphone choice and its become something they have to vehemently defend to their friends and colleagues. How did we get here? Do you question any other consumer product choice? You never hear “I can’t believe you bought a GILLETTE razor?!” .

Siri Shows Where BlackBerry’s Voice-Powered Search Went Wrong

With the unveiling of the iPhone 4S, consumers were given a look at Siri – the personal assistant app that comes with the device. It looks like the technology is powered by Nuance, which RIM also licenses for its voice-powered universal search. It seems both run on Nuance technology and the difference is the implementation. It’s not a stretch for RIM to update the voice-powered universal search in a way that’s even better than Siri.
