Key features include:

* Over-the-air synchronization of mail, address book, calendar in the native BlackBerry UI

iPhone 3.0 vs Palm Pre vs BlackBerry vs Android vs WinMo

iphone3osfeatchart

The above comparison chart is an interesting way to look at the smartphone market’s most popular devices. The list is missing Nokia, Motorola and LG, but the chosen devices are close competitors and the information is still very well put together.

Before you let the Hatorade out about this list, the author would like you to know a few things:

  • I used a set of arbitrary criteria to set up this chart, but I’ll tell you what they are. For iPhone 3.0, we’re using only features Apple permits. Yes, it’s possible to jailbreak or unlock your iPhone to add other features or carriers, but Apple will consider you an enemy and try to destroy your phone if you do that, so we don’t approve. For Windows Mobile, we only used features available in the US marketplace right now–though Windows Mobile 6.5 won’t change the landscape much. For Google Android, we used features publicly available on the G1, HTC Magic or Google Developer phones. And for Palm Pre, we guessed as best we could based on Palm’s public statements.
  • Yes, I left out Symbian. They’re just not a force in the US marketplace right now, and I’m a US writer. Maybe next year, guys.
  • This chart tries to steer clear of hardware features that may vary by phone model with the more prolific OSes
  • .

Some things I would note about the list:

  • BlackBerry applications are probably in a number range close to Windows Mobile. Since both platforms cater to enterprise, when a company develops for Windows Mobile it usually includes a BlackBerry port.
  • App World is coming soon so that will be added to BlackBerry’s column.
  • I would have compared BlackBerry on BES because it’s an enterprise device that should be used on said system.

How to restore autotext on your BlackBerry

    Comments

Hacking the Matrix on a Curve. Photo courtesy of Nan Palmero.
Have you painstakingly created Autotext entries, only to have them wiped after converting to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES)? Nan Palmero has been Tweeting a how to he’s come across which I’d like to help share with the community. Here is how you restore your Autotext entries:

      1. Go to Settings/Options and select Enterprise Activation (or Advanced Options then Enterprise Activation).
      2. Hold in the ALT key and type CNFG (multi-tap it on a 7100 device, so CNFFG).
      3. Change Wireless Sync to “No” and save.
      4. Restore the data.
      5. Repeat step 2.
      6. Change Wireless Sync to “Yes.”
      7. Let it redo an Enterprise Activation (automatic – just back out to the home screen).

More BES 5.0 information revealed — release date, features

    Comment

Longtime friends of BBCool, Simon Sage and Al Sacco, were at RIM’s media event in New York yesterday (we couldn’t attend because of a scheduling conflict, sigh) and both were able to grab more info on RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 – codenamed Argon. First to release dates, where RIM claimed a Q2 release date for BES 5.0. This may seem like lip service considering Argon was due to launch, oh, nine WES’ ago, but according to RIM, beta versions have been in the hands of companies for the last year, and in use internally for two, so I’m confident we’ll see it soon.

In addition, our boy Simon was able to grab an extended BES 5.0 feature set from what we posted yesterday – you can find it after the jump. If you’re still hungry for more Argon info, Al Sacco has written a great article on the Five (BES) 5.0 Features CIOs Need to Know About. As always, we’ll post more about Argon as we learn more.

    RIM announces BES 5.0

    Comment

    RIM logo

RIM announced today the impending release of the latest version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server. BES 5.0 will add a bunch of new features to improve the BlackBerry experience for enterprise users. Here’s a quick list of what’s been announced:

    * Retrieve corporate documents behind firewalls
    * Add, read, rename and delete folders on the handset and have those changes be applied to the desktop email client
    * Create rules within the inbox to filter email and have those changes be applied to the desktop
    * View attachments in calendar entries and meeting requests
    * Download and store emails and email attachments onto microSD cards

It definitely sounds like the main focus of BES 5.0 is improving desktop/BlackBerry interaction in regards to email and calendaring functions. I’m also really excited about being able to take better advantage of the microSD card. We’ll let you know more about BES 5.0 as soon as we get it.

How to sync all your contacts, calendars and events with Nexthaus

Most companies who are BlackBerry-centric have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. It’s the ultimate solution for sync’ing your device with your contacts, calendars and events wirelessly with your desktop/laptop. But what about that growing consumer market? The average consumer is clearly not going to spend the cash or energy to set up their own BES, but they still need to sync their device. One option available to you is Nexthaus.

Among the many benefits of having a sync’ed lifestyle is that your life stays organized. Having all your calendars and contacts sync’ed wirelessly means you can effectively manage your life and stay mobile. Take for example the following situation:

You’re at a dinner party and one of the guests just so happens to work for that store you’ve been meaning to go to. The guest offers his contact info and tells you to come by the store Monday morning. When the conversation is done, you log the contact info into your phone and set a calendar event for the date, time and location of the store. Sync’ing this info will mean you’ll instantly know of schedule conflicts and you’ll be reminded when the time comes. Being sync’ed means more effective networking.

Nexthaus is a company we’ve been working with recently and they have great software to sync your device wirelessly. The first thing you need to do is get a copy of the software. Go to their homepage and select SyncJe for BlackBerry. Now follow these simple instructions and you’re set.

If you know of other companies that offer similar software, we’d love to hear about them. Leave a comment and we’ll follow up.

BES Admins: Port3101.org is your new home

    Comments

Tomorrow is January 31st, or 31/01, if you prefer. Why is this day important? Well, if you’re a BES admin, it means that you have a new home on the Internet: Port3101.org. Port3101 is a forum community built by BES admins, for BES admins. And we’re not talking about just any BES admins, but industry luminaries (and occasionally BBCool contributers) like Jibi (give him a shout out for the great logo he designed! Based off of BBCool’s WES cards, true story) and NJ BlackBerry.

We’ve spent some time tooling around on Port3101, and we’re pretty impressed considering it doesn’t officially launch until tomorrow. There’s already a healthy following of contributors, and the Knowledge Base and 3101 sections are stacking up threads. It’s a little weird that the off-topic discussion area has the most posts by far, but we expect that to even out post-launch.

So check out Port3101.org and tell us what you think; we’ll be keeping a close eye on how it develops. Oh yeah, and for the newbs, Port 3101 is for outbound connections initiated by the BES to RIM’s SRP infrastructure – act like you know.

RIM releases patch for BES PDF security threat (BlackBerry Bytes)

    Comments

RIM logoRIM released a security patch earlier this week to fix a security vulnerability related to the PDF distiller in the BES’ BlackBerry Attachment Service. If left unchecked, the vulnerability would allow malicious code to be hidden within a PDF attachment to cause memory corruption or execute commands on the BlackBerry.

The security threat affects BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 Service Pack 3 (4.1.3) through 4.1 Service Pack 6 (4.1.6) and BlackBerry Professional Software 4.1 Service Pack 4 (4.1.4). BES admins, act now! Click the link below to read RIM’s security advisory.
