RIM is like any other smartphone manufacturer in that they’re constantly trying to attract more developers. These days, applications sell smartphones and the more developers you have supporting your platform the better. But what attracts developers to a smartphone? Any developer is trying to afford lunch just like the next guy, and there are a few things your average developer is looking for, including: a good marketplace to sell the app, a large user base that purchases apps, and the ability to build a brand and get some recognition for a good app.

BlackBerry App World 2.0 is now available in the BlackBerry Beta Zone as an invite-based beta. If you’re registered for the Beta Zone, you’ll hopefully get a beta invite. App World 2.0 will launch with the following features and enhancements:

  • Supports OS 4.5 and above
  • 4.4 and below to still support App World 1.1
  • App World 2.0 app is smaller than 1.1 (in KB). This is due to dropped 4.4 and below support as well as general optimizations
  • Improved image caching so there will be icons and apps when you load it up right away
  • New BBM-style menu hierarchy categories with a new themes section (the whole system is called top 25). The top menu items are: Recently Updated, New, Top Free, Top Paid, and Themes.

App World is now available in 65 countries worldwide and in six languages. RIM boasts over a million downloads per day which is really good considering it’s relatively new to the space. Join the beta zone at blackberry.com/beta and hopefully you’ll get your invite.

App World 2.0 Press Event Takeaways: Consumer Focus is Paramount

Comments

The App World 2.0 press event was special for BlackBerry but it also reinforced how App World was still behind relative to the competition. The most important upgrades offered were long overdue such as credit card account-based billing. The BlackBerry ID account system will make it easier than ever to buy content, and it seemed to hint at greater media channel opportunities down the line to every BlackBerry user on the planet.

What pleased me about the App World 2.0 demonstration was the fluidity and finesse of the navigation. The BlackBerry Messenger-like layout translates into a simple amount of menu options and easy browsing of long lists in the way that BlackBerry pioneered: scrolling down. The new storefront is quickly populated by apps and info by way of improved cashing of App World data. Category switching from side to side makes a lot of sense and I can’t wait until they introduce more categories like gaming.

Quick Walkthrough Video of App World 2.0

Comments

At a recent media event in New York we got a preview of App World 2.0 which is set to launch this summer. Some of the major improvements include carrier billing and new Top 25 sections. These sections, which also break out themes into their own Top 25 section, help to make navigation and app discovery a little easier. Barcodes are also a bigger feature with App World 2.0, allowing you to scan barcodes to download apps. The above video is a nice and quick walkthrough of what to expect in App World 2.0. Too bad they couldn’t show the purchase process though.
