We keep hearing that 512MB of RAM is the minimum requirement for OS 6 and while this hasn’t been confirmed by RIM, it’s good to know that devices such as the BlackBerry Bold 9650 will also be getting BlackBerry 6. It’s very possible that the OS 6 rollout could be like when OS 5 was released. We could probably expect a similar lineup of devices and backwards compatibility.

There’s a cool contest going on right now with RIM and Verizon to promote the new BlackBerry Bold 9650. This weekend in NYC, contest administrators will be going around and taking video testimonials on a BlackBerry Bold 9650 from Verizon. Participants will answer the question, “How do you live your life bold?” The boldest video wins one of three bold adventures: an African safari, a diving trip to the Great Barrier Reef, or a Costa Rican rainforest trip. Be Bold has already been to Boston and gathered up some great bold testimonials. After NYC, they’ll be headed to Chicago, Atlanta and San Francisco.
Readers can also join the Live Bold. Be Bold. Facebook fan page for a chance to win the new BlackBerry Bold (the fan page will be giving away one smartphone per week). For more free giveaways, BlackBerry fans can visit the events in their cities.

US Cellular has confirmed by press release that they will be offering the BlackBerry Bold 9650 in early August and a “BlackBerry flip smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard”. The 9670 looked pretty ugly when pictures first surfaced but the more we see of this device, the better it looks. It looks like Verizon will be the first to offer the device with US Cellular next. There are many Pearl Flip users out there who are looking forward to this upgrade.
The updated Theme Studio is now available with support for the BlackBerry Pearl 3G 9100 and the BlackBerry Bold 9650. There doesn’t seem to be anything else new other than device support in BlackBerry Theme Studio Serve Pack 1. Ideally, the Theme Studio team would be much more active considering they represent such a large percentage of App World content. RIM could be investing money in giving theme developers more wallpapers, icon sets and animations to work with.
The biggest news this week is probably all the hype around OS 6 and which devices will be getting the upgrade. Rumors (which are borderline fact) are circulating that the 9700 is getting a memory refresh to 512MB of RAM in order to make it OS 6 ready. If OS 6 requires 512MB of RAM, the only device currently in RIM’s product line that will support 6 is the 9650.
Should users be upset about this? Take a look at the iPhone. The iPhone has a 2 year obsolescence since the iPhone 3G, a 2 year old device, will not be getting the OS 4 upgrade. By the time the 9700a launches, it could be a 2 year old device. Therefore, for all the users complaining that their device is becoming obsolete, I think this is a general complaint towards consumer electronics, and isn’t something necessarily wrong with RIM’s strategy. What are your thoughts?

The Verizon Bold 9650 is for sale online at $149.99 with a 2 year contract and a $100 online discount. In general, the Bold 9650 is a very solid QWERTY device with double the memory of other modern BlackBerrys (512MB). It’s not clear what devices will be getting an OS 6 upgrade, but if memory is any indication than the Bold 9650 is definitely a contender. Our fingers are crossed.
