BlackBerryCool Roundup for the Week of June 7th

A lot of apps launched this week and every content provider has a way of providing all the World Cup 2010 news to your BlackBerry. We didn’t hear from Viigo this week which is strange because they’re usually very active when it comes to major sporting events such as the World Cup. The last press release was from March when the company joined RIM, and perhaps joining such a large organization naturally slows down your company. We’ve been hearing more about OS 6 and with each leaked video of the 9800 or 9670 clamshell, we learn a little more. OS 6 will feature a lot of new APIs for developers to play with and hopefully we’ll see an influx of apps that leverage these new features. This coming week we’ll also see the launch of App World 2.0 which should bring some interesting news for developers and users alike. Be sure to catch up on a week of BlackBerry after the jump.

BlackBerry Bold 9800 Slider and OS 6 Full Video and Images

Some really clean pictures of the BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider have emerged and the device looks much nicer than we previously thought. All it took was someone with a high-rez camera to take some decent pictures and some comparison shots to see just how great this device looks. From the picture post, we know a few specs about the 9800 including:

  • No SurePress
  • 5 MP camera
  • 512MB of RAM
  • No convenience keys on the side
  • DX-1 battery

Along with the new pictures is a full video walkthrough of OS 6. The video is in Chinese but we’ll have details about it shortly. Watching someone use OS 6, it doesn’t look like there is anything tremendously new going on. It seems like OS 6 is all about user interface and adding a more visual experience to using a BlackBerry. There are new gestures with OS 6, and it makes you wonder what OS 6 will bring for non-touchscreen devices. Make sure to click the ‘read more’ link and check out all the new pics.

Pictures and Video of the BlackBerry Bold 9800 Slider With OS 6

The BlackBerry Bold 9800 Slider aka Mr T. aka the BlackBerry Talladega aka Ricky Bobby has shown itself in both picture and video form and it’s looking really nice. So far we’ve seen two devices, the clamshell and the slider, running 6, and they look to be a little more on par with the other consumer devices on the market right now. The slider is a cool form factor, but with both a touchscreen and a trackpad, you have to wonder if there is some redundancy.

In the above video, the user doesn’t touch the trackpad and instead relies on the touchscreen. This makes sense, because OS 6 seems very touchscreen-friendly, but it just makes you wonder what the use case for the trackpad is. It’s also good to see SurePress wasn’t in use here. While SurePress makes sense for typing, it does create for an awkward user experience, and I found it made the Storm2 experience a little buggy. Overall, this device looks like it still needs a little more time in the oven but it’s coming along nicely.

BlackBerry Bold 9800 Slider Caught on Video

We finally have video of the upcoming Bold slider but it’s really short and doesn’t show much in the way of detail. We’re hearing the Bold 9800 slider will not have SurePress, which is a blessing considering the Storm2’s SurePress has been known to be a little unreliable. Either way, a touchscreen QWERTY is going to be a really fun form factor and I think everyone is looking forward to trying out this device.
