The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is a really decent device for those that want a powerful BlackBerry, but are looking for something smaller and more modern that the Bold 9000.
The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is the latest update to the Bold series and it’s all the specs you would expect from a Bold device, slightly upgraded and in a smaller form factor. Like many of the devices we have been seeing from RIM lately, it is a hybrid device, combining the power of the Bold with the design of a Curve 8900.
The Bold 9700 from T-Mobile ships with OS 5.0.0.330, which is a welcomed update to the device. What is less positive about the launch is that the device doesn’t ship with the latest version of BlackBerry Messenger. The T-Mobile Bold 9700 ships with BlackBerry Messenger version 4.7.0 rather than 5.0 (this is based on the device I’m holding in my hand). Ideally, T-Mobile and RIM would have at least had a warning message of some sort that tells users where they can get the latest version of BBM. The white BlackBerry Bold 9000 dummy units have arrived at Rogers and we’re expecting them to go on sale in the next couple of weeks. We’re being told that there are only about 20,000 units total for all of the Rogers network so if you want a limited edition BlackBerry, this might be the one to go for. Ronen over at BerryReview got a tip about the latest download links for OS 5.0.0.314. Make sure to get them fast as they tend to get ripped from Rapidshare fast.
The standard caveat applies: if you don’t know what you’re doing, stay away from these leaked OS versions. Back up your device too.
If these get ripped, we would appreciate posting a mirror link. Also, let us know if you find any bugs or this negatively affects your device.
With the BlackBerry Bold 9700 now official, we can take a look at the known specs for the device. Overall, things are to be expected. The device takes everything that the 9000 had, and improves on it. The easiest way to understand the Bold 9700, is to see how it compares to its predecessor.
