Indian Government May Require BES Emails be Sent to ISPs

Comments

The Indian government’s telecom department has suggested a workaround for accessing encrypted BlackBerry emails. The workaround involves getting unencrypted copies of emails from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server sent to an internet service provider’s monitoring system. Security agencies will be able to work with the ISP’s to obtain any information they desire from these corporate emails.

While BlackBerry corporate email is fully encrypted on a BES when moving between BlackBerrys, it remains unencrypted while it resides on the BES. “Feeding the email from the enterprise server to the ISP’s monitoring systems can, accordingly, help security agencies access the communication in pure text form,” DoT proposal said.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server Service Pack 2 Now Available for Download

Comments

BES admins can now download the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Service Pack 2 and take advantage of some cool new features such as additional metrics, reports and notifications to help monitor the system health as well as user self-service tools and pre-population of messages of up to 3000. Recently, we saw the leaked feature set, which was a pretty clear indication that SP2 was on the way.

BES 5.02 features single sign-on (SSO), initial support for separating business vs. personal content on the BlackBerry, new security self-service options for BlackBerry smartphone users, all new support for Microsoft Hyper-V for server virtualization, and much more.

Remember when we said RIM soft announced features to deal with corporate liable vs employee liable devices? Well it looks like this update is what they were talking about. Remote removal of corporate data from employee-owned devices is a new function built into BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.2 that is expected to be supported with an upcoming versions of the BlackBerry OS, allowing IT administrators to remove only corporate data from an employee-owned BlackBerry without affecting the employee’s personal information and applications. Additional features for keeping corporate content separate from personal content on employee-owned devices are expected later this year.

RIM Soft Announces New BlackBerry Feature for Employee-Liable Devices

Comments

We have been talking a lot about employee-liable versus corporate-liable BlackBerrys for a long time here on BlackBerryCool. Ahmed Datoo of Zenprise summed it up best in this article about BES Express. The idea is that smartphones have become so prevalent that every organization needs to deal with devices on their network that haven’t been explicitly deemed “corporate safe”. These devices are called employee liable, as in the employee is liable for the device as it hasn’t been approved. There is no way to stop the shift towards employee liable devices, as employees are becoming much more aware of the smartphones they purchase, and being a player in the mobile industry requires you understand all platforms available.

BlackBerry-Based WIC Pager Pilot Program at Children’s Hospital

Comments

Currently, many hospitals use an outdated pager system to get in touch with doctors on call. This solution does not allow admins to know whether the message was received and relies on a code system that doesn’t provide much detail as to the nature of the page. Wallace Wireless have a BlackBerry-based solution that brings pager like services to BlackBerry users. The system is in the process of being piloted at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), and if it’s successful could set a new standard for healthcare professionals.
