BlackBerry Monaco/Monza Pics Emerge

blackberry touch monaco

This is going to be an interesting year for BlackBerry devices. While there are some really cool form factors on the way, you have to wonder what to make of BlackBerry 6.1 in light of a QNX OS coming in 2012. Will upgrading be just like BlackBerry 6 where we’ll see a handful of devices able to upgrade? Or will the QNX OS be more of a leap? Either way, The Monaco looks really cool but it’s the Bold Touch that takes the show in our opinion. The old school Bold form factor was the best.

Potential Release Timeframes for Bold Touch, Torch 2 and Next Generation Curve

blackberry roadmap

The above slide shows a potential roadmap for the Bold Touch, next generation Curve, and the Torch 2. It’s not clear where the slide came from exactly, and could be T-Mobile interpretation of when they expect these products to launch. Either way, it’s interesting to see what’s in the pipeline and when these devices might arrive. How awesome would it be to have a PlayBook paired with a Bold Touch?

More Details on the Upcoming BlackBerry Slider

BGR dropped some info on the upcoming BlackBerry slider we’ve been hearing rumors about for a long time now. While none of the details are confirmed, it’s still interesting to read through the possible specs. We’ll be able to confirm at least some of these specs when we have a visual, but for now we’re just going on rumor.

Here is what we’re hearing:

  • It’s a portrait-oriented slider. While most people assume a device with slideout keyboard would end up being something like HTC’s devices, we’ve been told this particular handset is more like the Palm Pre in terms of layout.
  • The phone will run BlackBerry OS 6.0.
  • The rumored device will 100% support Wi-Fi 802.11n.
  • The resolution unfortunately has not improved, it is still 360×480.
  • No word on if this will have a touch screen, but we’d assume so, and our source alluded to this possibly being what the rumored BlackBerry Magnum/Dakota evolved into. Not saying there won’t be a Bold-like device with touchscreen, optical trackpad, and physical keyboard, but this might be released first.
  • If it does have a touch screen, this could in fact be the mythical BlackBerry Storm slider — picture a Storm 9520 with a slide up Bold-esque keyboard.
  • The phone will not be a Verizon exclusive — it’s supposed to be a GSM/HSPA device.

It would be a shame if this device didn’t come with a touchscreen because I think touchscreens have the most consumer appeal and app potential. Especially if this device is going to be running OS 6, there should be a host of features to make development easier. BlackBerry widgets will be fully supported by then as well as probably even more APIs by that time. In any case, this is shaping up to be an interesting form factor.

BlackBerry Cool Roundup for the Week of January 25th

The most exciting news this week was definitely checking out the BlackBerry Magnum. It’s really a shame that this device will never see the light of day (sources tell us), but it’s still very possible that a touchscreen/QWERTY hybrid is in the cards. Even though the Magnum had no OS loaded on it, we could still see that it used SurePress, which in my opinion would have been a little awkward. On the other hand, the Bold 9000 form factor is one I sincerely miss and hope RIM brings it back.

Video of the BlackBerry Magnum Shows SurePress Tech

The BlackBerry Magnum is the a hybrid touchscreen and QWERTY device that is encased in a Bold 9000 form factor. Cellguru has an engineering version on hand and after having previously posted pics, he now has some video up. The device doesn’t have an OS loaded on it because it’s clearly very early in the engineering phase. Everyone I’ve spoken to says this device isn’t going to make it to market, which is a shame because I love the form factor and I would definitely buy this device. What do you think?

Leaked BlackBerry Magnum Is Cool But Will Not Launch

Cellguru got his hands on the BlackBerry Magnum, the touchscreen QWERTY hybrid that we’ve been hearing rumors about for some time now. While this device has been scrapped and will probably never see the light of day, there are also rumors of a BlackBerry Dakota which could come to market. The Dakota is still in very early planning stages so it’s still in the air about what to expect. It’s unlikely that the Dakota will come in a Bold 9000 form factor, which is sort of a shame.
