BB LogoThe sharp-eyed Ronen has picked up on a knowledgebase article which outlines all the big changes in OS 4.3. For anyone not lucky enough to have picked up a new BlackBerry 8130, this should give you all the info you need.

Some of the big changes we’ve heard of before now, but here’s the round-up: enhanced SureType; wireless software updates; sending voice note by e-mail, PIN and IM; phone bass and treble adjustment; security options for locking long-distance and specific phone numbers; local search and route saving on BlackBerry Maps; video MMS support; streaming media; Media Player playlists; video recording; Bookmarks and History viewable on Browser launch; and finally, syncing address books and calendars with integrated e-mail, such as Yahoo! and (presumably) Gmail if you’re on BIS 2.4. Pretty awesome stuff!

UPDATED: Telus 8130 hits online store, Ottawa gets in early

Telus 8130Canadians rejoice! Telus has opened up the BlackBerry 8130 for sale, $199.99 with a three year hook in your cheek. Side-loading microSD slot, 2 mpx camera, EVDO compatibility, GPS, A2DP, and comes bundled with not only the lovely new Facebook app, but also Pocket Express. A solid release combined with Telus’ generally rosy third quarter report paints a pretty picture for this carrier’s near future. Props to BlackBerry Sync for nailing the dates and deets.

UPDATE: With a bit of smooth talking, yours truly got the Telus folks here in Ottawa to crack open their shipment early. The rep I talked with hadn’t touched a BlackBerry before, so she was just about as excited as I was to give it a shot.

Garmin bids $3.3 billion on Tele Atlas

Comments

Tele AtlasTele Atlas, the fine folks who do BlackBerry Maps, are in the process of being bought. Fellow Dutch navigation company, TomTom, had already put about $3 billion on the table, but now that GPS heavyweight Garmin has stepped up, it looks like a bidding war is going to ensue. Both TomTom and Garmin have experience on handhelds, and can potentially bring some new stuff to BlackBerry Maps, but it’s more likely that Tele Atlas will keep doing what they do best, regardless of who owns them.

“Given the high growth and rapid change the navigation market has undergone to date, we feel that now is the right time for Garmin to move ahead with this proposed combination with Tele Atlas,” Garmin Chief Executive Min Kao.

RIM publishes GPS and BlackBerry Maps developer guide

Comments

RIM logoWe always like to keep an eye out on what RIM is doing for the BlackBerry development community, because we want them to develop cool new apps for us. So it pleased BBCool HQ to notice that RIM recently published a GPS and BlackBerry Maps Development Guide on their developers site. The guide is jam packed with a bunch of mumbo jumbo that we don’t understand, but that we’re sure is perfect for BlackBerry developers to get the most out of GPS and BlackBerry Maps.

Actually, it sounds like the kind of thing any LBS developer would be interested in if they wanted to win thousands of dollars in cash prizes in the Tele Atlas ‘Maps in Apps’ developer contest we told you about a few days ago (hint hint). The full RIM .pdf can be downloaded here.
