BlackBerry Cool Roundup for the Week of February 22nd

If I had to boil the week down to the biggest news, I’d say it’s centered around the news that Verizon is dropping a ton of older devices from their inventory. There were rumors from analysts that the Storm (probably the 9530) was going to be nixed because it wasn’t selling well and there were so many complaints about the device. Soon after the leak we saw some official looking documents saying Verizon will discontinue the Storm 9530, Curve 8330, 8830 and Pearl Flip 8230. While I like the idea of killing old devices in favor of newer ones, I just hope prices continue to come down. Hit the jump and catch up on everything that happened this week.

Verizon to Discontinue the Storm 9530, Curve 8330, 8830 and Pearl Flip 8230

There’s a semi-confirmed rumor that Verizon will discontinue the Storm 9530, Curve 8330, 8830 and Pearl Flip 8230. We’ve heard that the Storm is on its way out, but its news to see the Curve 8330 (America’s most popular smartphone), and the Pearl Flip, a form factor that was never really given a chance, are both gone as well. We all knew that these devices would be on their way out eventually, as carriers update their stock with the latest devices.
Are you sad to see any of these go?

BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 launches on Alltel

Alltel has launched the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230, the first BlackBerry Pearl flip phone. The device is geared towards a younger smartphone user and is meant as an introductory BlackBerry.

This is one of those devices where if you don’t like it, then it isn’t meant for your demographic. Girls, teens and people who enjoy the closure of ending a phone call on a flip phone will love this device.

Features include:
· Internal LCD screen with 240 x 320 resolution
· External screen with 160 x 128 resolution
· SureType QWERTY keyboard
· Trackball navigation
· Built-in GPS with BlackBerry Maps

Alltel is offering the BlackBerry Pearl Flip for $79.99, after a $70 mail-in rebate and two-year service agreement on a qualifying Smart Choice Pack.

BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 comes to US Cellular

The carrier US Cellular is getting the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230. The Pearl Flip is the only BlackBerry flip phone and is targeted at a younger BlackBerry consumer demographic.

The Pearl Flip, with its 2.6-inch main display, 2-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth and GPS sensor will become available at US Cellular sometime in the middle of June.

US Cellular’s subsidized pricing for these devices has not been revealed.

Bell to launch BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 March 6th

Our fellow Canadian droogs over at MobileSyrup have uncovered a black and white image of some upcoming BlackBerrys on the Bell network. Ignore the ugly Palm device on the left and you will see Black and Pink versions of the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230. The image also displays a launch date of March 6th, but no pricing information. However, I think it’s reasonable to expect a ‘less-than-$100′ pricetag, or possibly even free, with a 3-year contract.
