Location of stolen BlackBerry
This is where Protect places my BlackBerry

Dear BlackBerryCool,

You guys write about apps like BlackBerry Protect and SmrtGuard all the time, and I thought I would give Protect a try. Just my luck, last week I had my BlackBerry stolen and I turned on Protect to see if I could find it. Protect gave me a map with a pin of where my device is, accurate to about 6 meters (ED NOTE: pictured above). So I decided to call the police and report it stolen because it’s technically theft over $500, making it worth police attention. In the report I said I have software installed to help find my BlackBerry and an investigator called me back a few days ago. I gave him the screenshot and he said he would get back to me. This is what he said:

Lost Device and Backup Service Head-to-Head: SmrtGuard Versus BlackBerry Protect

When RIM announced BlackBerry Protect, the first thing on our mind was “what will that do to SmrtGuard?”. SmrtGuard has been providing BlackBerry users with a similar service for a long time before RIM decided they wanted to eat their lunch and now that the Protect app is out of Beta, it’s a good time to compare the two apps/services. Protect is a great move on RIM’s part because it offers a great backup/lost device service for free, which adds a lot of value to the whole platform. SmrtGuard also has a free version, allowing users to dip their feet in the SmrtGuard pool before taking the plunge to the full featured version. So which offers more value?

BlackBerry Software Roadmap Leaked Detailing OS 7 and More

2011 software roadmap

RIM’s software roadmap has been leaked and it details what apps RIM will be focusing on for the rest of the year. It looks like RIM’s big priorities this year are:

BlackBerry OS 7
BIS 4.0/4.1
BlackBerry Protect
BlackBerry ID
App World 2.1 and App World for PlayBook
BlackBerry News 1.1
TicketMaster 2.0
Facebook
Social Feeds
Twitter

There isn’t any news about OS 7 just yet and it’s not clear whether it will be the QNX OS or another update to their legacy operating system. One thing we do know, is that RIM is focusing its attention on social networking and fostering more sharing of content and communication. While it’s cool to see RIM developing apps that make the BlackBerry experience better, you have to wonder why the third party developer market can’t do it for them. If RIM worked harder on making the platform value proposition better for developers, they wouldn’t have to develop the software in-house.

Hit the jump to check out the upcoming features for RIM’s first party apps.

BlackBerry Protect Backup Solution Rollout Coming Soon

blackberry protect

BlackBerry Protect is a pretty cool service that lets you backup your contacts, SMS, calendar items, bookmarks and more in the cloud. The service also helps you find your BlackBerry if it’s stolen by tracking its location and giving you a web portal. During the beta, the web portal became inaccessible and the URL was overly complicated, but hopefully a lot of this has been fixed for the official release. The official release is potentially slated for March 5th in North and Latin America, and April 2nd for Asia Pacific.
