New Touchscreen Training Slide: BlackBerry Storm 3 or Storm 2 Refresh?

Training slide for the Storm3

The above slide shows what is rumored to be a training slide for the upcoming BlackBerry Storm 3, which according to the specs looks like a somewhat minor update to the Storm2. We have been hearing a lot of rumors about the Storm 3, such as the fact that it will come with a new OS possibly developed in partnership with the recent QNX acquisition. If you’re going to believe these rumors, the device described here is more of a Storm2 refresh with BlackBerry 6. This makes sense as RIM will probably refresh all OS 5 devices to run OS 6 before they start rolling out what could be considered OS 7.

Comparing Smartphone Keyboards Highlights Bold Advantages and Storm2 Disadvantages

Paul Ockenden of PC Pro put together a test comparing smartphone keyboards. The test was pretty basic, and while we can argue about the accuracy of the results, I think BlackBerry users can agree on the conclusions. The test involved typing the first couple of verses to Lou Reed’s “Pale Blue Eyes”, a telephone number, a web URL and a username/password. In each case, the operation was timed and accuracy noted. The results of the tests are shown in the above table.

Each phone was in its default mode, as it would be out of the box. One error is logged for each wrong word in the main text and for each wrong character in the phone number, web address, username and password. In each test, Paul tried to not look at the screen, and type as fast as he could, allowing the phone to correct any errors. Overall, the goal isn’t to type the fastest, but to get an idea for the speed to error ratio.

Stitcher Now Available for the BlackBerry Storm2 9550 and 9520

Stitcher is a free media/podcast player that is now available for the BlackBerry Storm2 9550 and the 9520. The app provides a large selection of on-demand content and is a decent media player for anyone into podcasts. Previously, the app was only available on the Curve 8300, 8310, 8320, 8900 and Bold 9000. When we last wrote about Stitcher, they mentioned their upcoming version 1.2, which is still set to launch early July. The update includes improved handling of longer shows, full seek functionality and support for Bluetooth streaming.

Grab Stitcher from stitcher.com/dl or BlackBerry App World.

Rumor: BlackBerry Storm2 Getting Improved Touchscreen and Recall

The bad press and feedback from the BlackBerry Storm2 has been never ending. That’s not to say that the Storm2 is a bad device, but of all BlackBerrys it has had the hardest time garnering mass appeal and its rivals have set the bar for quality incredibly high. My personal experience with the Storm2 has been varied. The Storm has some major bugs but it also makes apps looks really crisp and the larger screen is much appreciated.

Rumor sources are reporting that we may expect a worldwide (Verizon first) recall of the Storm2, as RIM have enhanced the touchscreen and made older models eligible for a replacement. Apparently, RIM has added silicone actuators to the touchscreen to improve the performance and tactile response. As of February 10th, 2010, all Storm2 devices contain this enhancement. You can identify these devices by a green dot on the master carton and/or date code on the back of the device (more details below).

BBC iPlayer Available for Bold 9700 and Storm2 Over WiFi Via Mobile Site

There are a ton of conditions in that title, isn’t there? The BBC iPlayer is now available as a mobile site that you can only access over WiFi, with from what I’ve read only the 9700 and the Storm2. While trying to access the site over 3G on Rogers, I got an error saying that the content is only available over 3G in the UK on 3’s network. By using WiFi, this seems to solve the problem and I can watch full videos and small clips from the site. Personally, I think it’s too bad that the player didn’t come as a BlackBerry app, as we all know the browser is relatively slow.

Check out the BBC iPlayer for the 9700 and Storm2 from bbc.co.uk/mobile/bbapps/.
