This Day in BlackBerry: What Was Hot Today for the Past 5 Years Pt. 2

The BlackBerry 7270 launched in April of 2005

We are going on 5 web years here at BlackBerryCool which, in human years, is about 160. It’s interesting how history repeats itself and this is nowhere more apparent than on BBCool. Some articles that were written years ago, such as “BlackBerry Devices Finally Launch in China”, are still relevant in 2010. Other articles, such as “Blackberry Reaches 5 Million Subscriber Mark”, make you realize just how far we’ve come.

Check out below for articles from the past. Granted, they all don’t fall on exactly April 7th, as previous writers sometimes took a day off, but they’re all within a day or two. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come (and haven’t).

Verizon BlackBerry Storm2 Official OS Upgrade Available

Verizon have officially launched OS for the BlackBerry Storm2 9550 and it looks to be a good update overall, except if you’re someone who uses BlackBerry Messenger Groups. Many users are reporting that they can’t get the keyboard to appear with, which is a deal breaker for a lot of people. If you’re not a BBM Groups user, you can expect a faster browser, some extra free space, and some enhancements to the virtual keyboard (other than in Groups). In order to download this update OTA, you will have to be running official software.

How to Upgrade Your OS.
Download OS from Verizon.

Comparing Smartphone Keyboards Highlights Bold Advantages and Storm2 Disadvantages

Paul Ockenden of PC Pro put together a test comparing smartphone keyboards. The test was pretty basic, and while we can argue about the accuracy of the results, I think BlackBerry users can agree on the conclusions. The test involved typing the first couple of verses to Lou Reed’s “Pale Blue Eyes”, a telephone number, a web URL and a username/password. In each case, the operation was timed and accuracy noted. The results of the tests are shown in the above table.

Each phone was in its default mode, as it would be out of the box. One error is logged for each wrong word in the main text and for each wrong character in the phone number, web address, username and password. In each test, Paul tried to not look at the screen, and type as fast as he could, allowing the phone to correct any errors. Overall, the goal isn’t to type the fastest, but to get an idea for the speed to error ratio.

Stitcher Now Available for the BlackBerry Storm2 9550 and 9520

Stitcher is a free media/podcast player that is now available for the BlackBerry Storm2 9550 and the 9520. The app provides a large selection of on-demand content and is a decent media player for anyone into podcasts. Previously, the app was only available on the Curve 8300, 8310, 8320, 8900 and Bold 9000. When we last wrote about Stitcher, they mentioned their upcoming version 1.2, which is still set to launch early July. The update includes improved handling of longer shows, full seek functionality and support for Bluetooth streaming.

Grab Stitcher from stitcher.com/dl or BlackBerry App World.

BlackBerry Cool Roundup for the Week of March 1st

It was an interesting week at BlackBerryCool because of all the news around the Pearl 9100, the Storm2 and the BlackBerry (Bold?) Slider. The BlackBerry Bold Slider is 100% real and looks like a really interesting form factor move for RIM. As long as the screen ratio is maintained, developers won’t have a hard time accommodating a new form factor, which means there really is no reason to go ahead and see if consumers want it. The only thing that I’m apprehensive about are the tiny keys. The QWERTY keypad looks very cramped which is a deal breaker for me but someone with smaller fingers wouldn’t mind.

Also big news is the rumor (semi confirmed by a BlackBerryCool reader), that the Storm2 is under recall at Verizon and they have received a shipment of new “enhanced touchscreen” devices. If your Storm2 has been unresponsive, bring it in to your local rep and try and get a new device. This could have a pretty big impact on RIM if the recall spreads to other carriers and countries.

The Pearl 9100 has also been in the news a lot this week. It seems the device might be getting a full QWERTY keyboard, which would make the Bold Slider’s look large. There are also rumors that the Pearl Flip is getting a similar update and might also have a full QWERTY keyboard. It’s all up in the air right now but still interesting news pieces.
