Happy 4th Birthday BlackBerry Cool!

Comments

bbcool birthday

The beginning of March marks the 4th year that BlackBerry Cool has been around. We started off fairly small with only a few Google ads and a lot of posts. Over the 4 years we’ve been reporting on BlackBerry, the device has gone from this, to this.

Also, our traffic has over the years gone from almost nothing to over 1 million uniques and 5 million pageviews per month!

To celebrate, we’re offering 20% off in the BlackBerry Cool store. Just use the code “BBCOOL4YEARS” which is good until Friday.

Thank you for reading BlackBerry Cool and we’re looking forward to 4 more years!

EDITOR’S NOTE: Sorry guys, the discount only applies to software.

Broken link day at BlackBerry Cool – Win $50! UPDATE

zombie

So Friday was apparently broken link day at BlackBerryCool. Both Mapquest 4 Mobile and Instafind were dead links and BBCool readers were not happy. My bad. My BlackBerry wasn’t working that day so I couldn’t check the links. I feel bad about the mess up so I’m running a giveaway contest in the hopes of making it up to the community.

Leave a comment about your latest BlackBerry frustration and win $50 to redeem at our store. The best comment will get a coupon emailed to them to be redeemed whenever you want.

UPDATE: Wow! Thanks so much for all your comments. It seems the BlackBerry Nation has a lot of frustration to vent and I wish I could give you all $50. I know it’s what everyone needs to feel better these days. I had to give the coupon to Matt for the following comment:

So I use my Blackberry for everything I do. I really mean that. Every single thing that I need to remember goes into my calendar. Some people say that thats not a good idea because then I will NEVER remember anything! Well…I guess they were right.
I have been dating the love of my life for 6 months now. She is everything to me. I even got her to buy an 8330 so we could BBM! Well, our six month anniversary was coming up and I think thats pretty big (as did she). I had it in my BB calendar to remind me 5 days before to go buy a gift and make a reservation for dinner. Well, it is midterms at school right now and I have been really busy! Lots of emails coming in and emails being sent. Lots of appointments being put into the calendar and well, I just became overwhelmed. This would not have been a problem if my calendar worked correctly but it seems as though my Blackberry started to leak memory. It got really low and started dumping appointments. (I think it does those before messages, right?) Yeah, you can see where this is going. (And yes, I DO backup to my Mac using PocketMac but I guess the appointment got deleted and overwrote the latest backup!)
I ended up ROYALLY screwing up and on the day of our anniversary, I had NOTHING. She got me an amazing watch and I was sitting there with nothing. Needless to say, she was really ticked off and I was in the dog house. I made it up to her though. I bought A LOT of flowers, a nice Tiffany’s necklace, and made reservations at the first place we ever had dinner as a couple. It was a very special night, but for the rest of our relationship, she is going to have the infamous “Blackberry memory leak” on me. I really want to say it was all my fault (I mean, I SHOULD remember that special day, right) but the Blackberry really should remind me, no? When I saw the look of sadness in Michelle’s eyes on our 6 month, it really stabbed my heart. I’m probably gonna have to also buy her a Niagara to make up for this!
That “Blackberry Frustration” could have cost me the love of my life…someone I want to spend forever with.

Pretty bad story, right?

I liked it for the following reasons:
-He relies on his BlackBerry for everything and he’s in trouble without it.
-His story touched me (I’m a sucker for romance).
-I want him to buy his gf something nice.
-The problem he describes seems fairly common yet avoidable.

Also, Mike Rubin, your comment really bummed me out.

Star Contacts for Blackberry v.1.0 for BlackBerry Reviewed!

Comments

Contact managers can be handy for those who need a little more dirt on their contacts, only to add it to a swelling Address Book. That’s precisely what Star Contacts by Sparkle Solutions Inc. is for. It’s a comprehensive address and contact management software. It can hold thorough Home, Business and Personal Information of your contacts, and offers users a better – a faster and more receptive – search engine than that of the Address Book that comes standard with every BlackBerry device. Though I’m often a skeptic when it comes to contact managers – they’re always trumpeting the “nicer, better, faster” mantra – I decided to give this one a try and was, in some instances, pleasantly surprised.

BlackBerry Cool adds Facebook fan page

Comments

FacebookSo, we’ve had our Facebook group for awhile now, but they just launched Fan Pages which look great. Not only is it a different layout, but by becoming a fan of something, it shows up in your profile for all to view. Application development is a go for the new pages too, which will let us tweak out the BlackBerry Cool page with some handy functions, like an RSS reader. If you’ve got your own organization that you’re looking to promote, you should look into making a page – it’s a great new addition to Facebook. We’ll be retiring the old group, so make sure to join the fan page here.

BBCool feature returns from the grave

Comment

ZombieSince the site reskin, we lost a few of our old features, such as our ever-popular Wallpaper Generator. Well, we’ve got it back, along with a few new pages. If you’re a BlackBerry professional (or you’re looking for BlackBerry professionals), be sure to check out our revamped Job Board. For those looking for something a little more light-hearted, we have new Free Software and Free Themes pages, which will be updated regularly as we stumble upon new stuff. Find something that should be up there? Drop us a line at info AT blackberry cool dot com with your suggestions! Finally, our Wallpaper Generator is purring like a kitten after much trouble. If you’ve got an image that you want to see on your BlackBerry minus all the fuss of Photoshop, pop it into the generator, and you’ll get it custom fit for your BlackBerry. We’re working hard to get the old Software and Hardware Guides back up, so keep your eyes peeled!

BlackBerry Cool hits up Jaiku and WidSets

Comment

BBCoolJust in case you might not be getting your daily fix of BBCool, we’ve got two new ways to get your dose. We’re now feeding posts to the ever-popular Jaiku, and have just been recently introduced to a cool new service called WidSets, which allows you to get customized feeds to your mobile via particular widget subscriptions. Still learning the kinks in WidSets, but it’s looking very promising. Don’t forget that we’ve still got our Facebook group, Viigo feed, twitter page, and are still working on getting MyBlogLog integrated with the site.
