Robert Scoble’s Latest Post Hints RIM Can Win Over Silicon Valley

Comments

Like him or dislike him, Scoble gets a lot of attention in the Valley and as a startup, winning his attention is a big deal. RIM is at CES 2013 and while it’s not showing off devices in a huge pavilion like previous years, it did take the time to get Scoble a BlackBerry 10 device. His latest facebook post says,”Today I saw the new Blackberry 10 that will be announced in a few weeks. I liked it a lot but it won’t get any Apple or Android fan hot and bothered.” While the statement is wrapped in pessimism, there’s something very telling about it. Consider how much it takes to change the mind of someone like Scoble who has invested so much emotionally in saying RIM is dead. His statement, while not 100% positive, is coming from someone who very recently told Alec Saunders to give up and go Android. This is a huge change.

Dear CBC, RIM and BlackBerry 10 are at CES 2013 in the Form of QNX

It’s especially painful when you read an anti-RIM article on the CBC versus other sites. It’s not that the CBC has to blindly defend every Canadian company, but they could at least have some honest, independent journalism rather than jumping on the anti-RIM bandwagon.

A recent article highlighting RIM’s absence from CES 2013 is a great example of this problem. It doesn’t make any sense for RIM to be at CES 2013 from a BlackBerry 10 perspective, yet the CBC is taking this as some sort of negative for the company, or making it indicative of a larger problem. All the while, the CBC is completely neglecting to mention the presence of QNX at the show.

Powertrekk – Charge Your BlackBerry With Water

Comment

One of Lisa and my favorite pieces of technology spotted at CES was tucked away in the Venetian. Though most of the action during the show is found at the Las Vegas Convention Center, you can find the obscure and sometimes scrappier start-ups in the neighboring hotel ballrooms. Powertrekk is a charger that uses a “PowerPukk” which holds a sodium silicate. As the water passes through the pukk, it produces a hydrogen gas. The gas then passes through a membrane, producing electricity to fuel the internal 1500 mAh battery and power your device via the USB port. Each pukk will fuel the internal 1500 mAh battery about two times.

CES 2012: Walkthrough of PlayBook OS 2 by Jon Wong of RIM

Comments

Jon Wong took the time to walk us through OS 2.0 on the PlayBook. We also took a look at some of the apps that make the PlayBook a “professional tablet” such as Citrix. It’s interesting to see how RIM has integrated social into the platform and it brings RIM back to its core messaging strengths. We also took a look at some of the Bridge improvements, such as the ability to now use your smartphone as a remote. This comes in handy for those who have their PlayBook hooked up to a TV and it’s out of reach. The remote event allows for gestures. Video after the jump.
