PEACE
Erik VanDrunen of RIM public relations had this to say about micro-USB: “A number of industry associations have endorsed micro-USB as a preferred charging standard, including the CTIA (in April 2009). RIM is committed to micro-USB as an industry standard because it’s smaller than mini-USB and supports the trend to thinner smartphones, without sacrificing features or capabilities.
EnGadgetMobile’s Thomas Ricketer on the current state of mobile chargers in Europe: “phone chargers, at the moment some 30 different types of chargers are used on handsets throughout Europe. Today, the European Commission received industry backing of its phone charger standard that relies on a micro-USB socket. The standard is now backed by all the majors (representing 90% of the European mobile market) including Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Apple, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments with compatible devices starting to appear in Europe next year. Or course, the micro-USB charger standard already has the blessings of CTIA, OMTP, and GSM Association, which implies a broader adoption beyond Europe, someday. One charger for any mobile phone… where’s the catch?”
It seems that like mini-USB before it, RIM working to make sure that the BlackBerry data transfer and changing cable remain ubiquitous.

I have recently found a good solution for a BlackBerry USB charging that I’d like to share with the community. A while back I purchased a Belkin Mini Surge Protector with USB Charger and I’m very satisfied with my purchase.
The Belkin Mini Surge Protector with USB Charger is a small, 3 outlet surge protector with 2 USB ports on one end. It plugs into any standard North American wall socket, and gives you 2 additional outlets (a total of 4 instead of 2), and 2 powered USB ports. More succinctly, it’s awesome.

Two chargers were launched by Duracell today, offering BlackBerry users a full hour’s worth of talk time and the equivalent in data use. The PowerSource Mini is packing two miniUSB ports, in case you’ve got a RAZR that needs charging at the same time, and can charge its lithium-ion battery through your car, AC outlet, or even your computer. It’s a little bulkier than your standard charging cord, but hey, for an extra charge on the go, I think I could make some room. Duracell also kicked off My Pocket Charger which runs on two double-AAs rather than a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and has the added benefit of supporting microUSB in case you plan on picking up the BlackBerry Kickstart or BlackBerry Javelin whenever they come out. If you’re interested, the PowerSource Mini is going for $49.99 and the Pocket Charger for a more affordable $14.99.

If you ever find that you’re charging your BlackBerry nowhere near a convenient surface, Driin has come up with a pretty cool and simple solution. It’s a simple plastic holder that loops onto your BlackBerry charger on the wall, and provides a spot for your BlackBerry to sit – that means no more leaving your device sprawled on the floor like so much unwashed laundry. €5.00 ($US 8.00) isn’t a crazy pricetag, either.

There are a few more accessories coming in for the BlackBerry 9000, covering the usual bases of skins, holsters and cases, but also some new stuff, like coloured battery door covers in blue, burgundy, brown and black, and stereo headphones. We might have seen the headphones before, but that charging pod looks pretty solid, and fits in with the latest styles of RIM’s official product line.

The folks at Innov8 let us know that they’ve released a BerryBUDDY charge stand for the BlackBerry Curve. It’s available for $26.95, although sadly our wish for a more Curve-oriented color scheme wasn’t granted. If you’re on the fence about picking up one of these bad boys you can check out our review of the BerryBUDDY Pearl, which should remain relevant for the Curve as well.

Remember WildCharge, the guys who were working on the wireless charging platform? Well, they’ve announced the launch of their product at CES, and it should be on shelves this quarter. The iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry 8800 and BlackBerry 8100 should all work just dandy with it, and considering I got an iPod touch for Christmas and use a Pearl, it sounds like a sure bet for me. I’ve never been especially happy that I’ve got to boot up my computer to charge the iPod, which the WildCharger will fix nicely. One thing we missed was that you need to attach an adapter to your device in order for the WildCharger to work, so you’ll have to be okay with a bit of extra bulk and be willing to pay another $34.99 on top of the $59.99 for the pad itself.

We just got some fresh concepts shots of the upcoming BerryBUDDY charging/syncing cradle for the Curve, and it certainly looks pretty slick. A light gray charger with chrome highlights might match the Curve’s style a bit better, but we ain’t complaining. Besides, it’ll still be awhile before this hits shelves, so changes are entirely possible. We took a look at the Pearl BerryBUDDY which had a sweet design, so hopefully innov8 can bring the same quality to the Curve.
