There’s an interesting trend in the mobile industry right now of using apps to microfinance political campaigns and charitable donations. The idea is that you launch an app that gets your message and donation button in front of as many mobile eyeballs as possible. A new website developed by a group of engineering students and former Facebook and Microsoft employees called ChooseForChange.com is looking for people to choose their favorite smartphone and donate to help fight global poverty. The goal is to raise money for the World Partnership Walk, whose funds go directly to international development projects supported by the Aga Khan Foundation Canada.
It’s a fun idea and if you’re interested in donating to the cause, perhaps it makes more sense just to donate directly to the Aga Khan Foundation and get straight to where the funds will end up eventually. Or, if you’d like to support your favorite smartphone brand, you can always head over to ChooseForChange.com.
UPDATE: Spoke to the PR team and they said “The reason we wanted to build awareness about World Partnership Walk was because it is an event that is held across Canada annually. We wanted the external community to become a part of this and have the opportunity to take part. The World Partnership Walk is only affiliated with the Aga Khan Foundation so 100% of the proceeds will go directly there anyways.”
There is a BBM spam message going around that suggests 35 cents will be donated to help Haiti when you forward the message to others. The message reads:
“Because of what has transpired in Haiti recently, Blackberry (sic) has decided to help out and give 35 cents for the cause when you pass this message along to your friends on BBM”
While most readers are familiar with BBM, and have probably disregarded the message, there are still some new users who are genuinely confused. Since BBM messages are totally free, passing the message on won’t incur a fee, it’s just misleading.

T-Mobile has made a very admirable move by announcing they are waiving international long distance fees for all calls to and from Haiti. “Our company and our employees care deeply for our customers, and we know that many customers have been directly impacted by the disaster in Haiti,” said Robert Dotson, president and CEO, T-Mobile USA. “While our thoughts go out to those in Haiti who are suffering so greatly at this time, our promise is to help people connect with those who matter most. I can think of no better time to demonstrate this commitment.”
