Foursquare for BlackBerry Updated to 5.0

Everyone’s favourite location-based social network for mobile has updated their BlackBerry app. On the heels of the release of the iOS and Android 5.0 Foursquare update, the BlackBerry update features all the same feature improvements. In addition to a graphical update, Foursquare 5 for BlackBerry also polished the user interface making it easier to share your whereabouts.

Foursquare Demos NFC Checkins at BlackBerry World

Last week at BlackBerry World 2012, Foursquare launched NFC checkins for their city discovery app. This will allow checkins via Foursquare-configured NFC tags as well as share venue and tip data simply by tapping devices together. Here’s a video demo of how it all works.

Free Social TV Watching App Yap.tv Now Available for BlackBerry Smartphones and PlayBook

Yap.TV is a pretty cool service that lets you navigate TV shows via an up-to-the minute program guide that gives you the latest shows as well as what’s trending. The app gives you insight into not only what the show is about, but what people are saying about it on the Internet. Watching the latest episode of Walking Dead and getting sick of the slow plot development? Get in on the conversation. With Yap.TV, you can connect yourself to a community of people watching TV and it adds another layer of entertainment. Yap.TV was previously only available on iPad, and it is now available for BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook tablet.

Whrrl Acquired by Groupon and Shuts Down Mobile Apps

It wasn’t that long ago that we wrote about Whrrl and their checkin service. The BlackBerry app was pretty cool although it was very much in Beta. There was also a mobile site that let you checkin to venues and join what Whrrl called societies. Societies are groups of people with similar interests and it’s this feature that makes them a clear acqhire and acquisition.

Since Whrrl was focused on allowing users to make a list of things they want to do locally, and join affinity groups of people with similar interests, it should be interesting to see how they fit into Groupon. Read more from Pelago’s CEO and Co-Founder, Jeff Holden after the jump.
