BlackBerryCool Roundup for the Week of June 7th

A lot of apps launched this week and every content provider has a way of providing all the World Cup 2010 news to your BlackBerry. We didn’t hear from Viigo this week which is strange because they’re usually very active when it comes to major sporting events such as the World Cup. The last press release was from March when the company joined RIM, and perhaps joining such a large organization naturally slows down your company. We’ve been hearing more about OS 6 and with each leaked video of the 9800 or 9670 clamshell, we learn a little more. OS 6 will feature a lot of new APIs for developers to play with and hopefully we’ll see an influx of apps that leverage these new features. This coming week we’ll also see the launch of App World 2.0 which should bring some interesting news for developers and users alike. Be sure to catch up on a week of BlackBerry after the jump.

Video of the BlackBerry Clamshell 9670 Hardware and OS 6

The BlackBerry Clamshell is the next generation of the Pearl Flip and video of the hardware and software are up courtesy of Driphter. This is a significant leap in the product line and it would be great if all BlackBerrys would take a similar jump in performance and hardware features. The clamshell 9670 is running, and it’s good to see the latest OS running on a non-touchscreen device. We have already seen OS 6 in action on the 9800, and the 9670 gives you an idea of what it will look like on a QWERTY. The above video is a hardware review, and after the jump is the software review. Be sure to check them both out.

BlackBerryCool Roundup for the Week of May 10th

This was a great week for BlackBerry news. The hot stories this week are the first video of the Bold slider and the clamshell, as well as the new details about the BlackBerry tablet. The BlackBerry tablet is an interesting product/accessory from RIM as it’s not clear what value it brings to BlackBerry users, since we’ve learned it will have no connectivity of its own, but rather act as a smartphone companion. In the end, it seems the BlackPad will only serve as a larger screen for when you want to view media on your BlackBerry, and unless there is really compelling software for it, it probably won’t be a hit.

Video Walkthrough of BlackBerry OS 6 on a 9670 Clamshell

The BlackBerry 9670 clamshell now has a leaked video up on YouTube but sadly the audio has been taken out. The walkthrough shows some of the inner workings of OS 6 and the navigation looks very smooth. The rubberband effect is present throughout the menus, much like the experience you get on the Storm2. As ugly as the device seemed in pictures, it actually looks pretty good in-hand. Some of the applications we get to see in action include BBM, Facebook, Twitter, Viigo and App World, which we’re all hoping comes preloaded. If the video gets taken down we have some screenshots after the jump.

More Leaked Pics of the BlackBerry Clamshell 9670 and BlackBerry Atlas 8980

We’re starting to see more pictures of the upcoming BlackBerry 9670 clamshell, and the BlackBerry Atlas 8980. We know the 9670 has a 5 megapixel camera, but that doesn’t deter from the fact that it might be the ugliest BlackBerry ever produced. It’s fat and looks like it would be very awkward in your pocket. We have been hearing about the Atlas as well, previously known as the 8910, and rumored to be heading to China. This device looks much nicer than the fat blob sitting beside it, and it’s definitely a slick looking modern smartphone. Too bad the 8980 doesn’t have some of that BlackBerry 6 goodness. More pictures after the jump.

BlackBerryCool Roundup for the Week of April 19th

This was a very exciting week in BlackBerry indeed. Not only have a ton of apps launched this week, likely in preparation for WES 2010, but we’ve seen some awesome advanced screenshots of OS 6, as well as the upcoming clamshell BlackBerry which will feature the latest OS.

In talking with BlackBerryCool readers, the resounding first impressions of the clamshell are “wow, it’s really ugly”. The BlackBerryCool Facebook page has 13 comments on the clamshell article, and only 1 person said they like “flip phones”, not even the clamshell in particular. Regardless of what you might think of the design, some will surely buy it. Considering there is a market for the LG Reveal, RIM will surely have no problem getting some decent numbers.

All of that aside, OS 6 looks awesome. Not only will OS 6 do great things for the general UI and navigation, but the implications for touchscreens is incredible. There are more gestures that will make using a touchscreen even more fun and efficient, and these will go a long way when RIM release some new touchscreen devices. The rumored touchscreen/QWERTY hybrids are going to be even better than imagined with this new OS. Hopefully we’ll have more details from WES.
